It may be premature to state this so early in the season, but Sunderland’s time in the Premier League may well be running out as they currently sit bottom of the top flight with just two points to their name after the first seven matches of the season.
Despite the appointment of former Dutch national manager Dick Advocaat, Sunderland’s fortunes have not improved and they recently suffered their third defeat on the trot away at Manchester United on the weekend to leave the Black Cats bottom of the pile.
Previous defeats to Tottenham (at home) and Bournemouth (away) will not have helped matters either, and in fact Sunderland have picked up just 2 points from a possible 21 on offer thanks only to draws against Swansea City and Aston Villa.
Sunderland’s home record stands at 0-1-2 2/5 and they’ve now gone four matches without a win at the Stadium of Light and indeed have won just twice in their last ten on home turf.
Visitors West Ham were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by Norwich City on Saturday, but nevertheless, West Ham have now extended their unbeaten run to four matches in the English top flight having previously beaten the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City away from home along with a 2-0 win over hapless Newcastle United.
Away from home, The Hammers have also claimed the scalp of Arsenal at The Emirates with an unlikely 2-0 win in their first away match of the season, and I daresay they won’t mind too much being on the road again this weekend when they make the trip up to the north-east on the back of three away wins on the trot.
West Ham’s away record stands at 3-0-0 7/1 and this impressive un on their travels have helped lift them up into an early third spot in the Premier League.
Given Sunderland’s lack of confidence, I’ll back West Ham with the round ball to avoid defeat but they might just edge this one perhaps 2-1.
