Next, I turn my attentions back to the World Cup qualifiers and Group A in the European section with hosts Sweden looking to bounce back from defeat last time out back in November when they lost 2-1 away at France.
Sweden sit in third spot in the group, but they’ll no doubt be hoping that they can take advantage of home soil in this evening’s encounter against Belarus, especially considering Netherlands face a tricky trip away at Bulgaria in this round of group matches.
The Swedes have made a better fist from their World Cup qualifying campaign this time around as they’ve held Netherlands to a 1-1 draw which was followed up with a 3-0 home win over Bulgaria, giving them a home record of 1-1-0 4/1. Look out for forwards Nyman and Forsberg as possible anytime goalscorers here.
Visitors Belarus are still without a win from their first four matches in Group A following defeats to Netherlands and Bulgaria along with draws against France and bottom nation, Luxembourg. This means they come into this encounter with just two points to their name, and have suffered back-to-back away defeats already within an away record of 0-0-2 1/5.
In fact, Belarus have tended to struggle away from home during World Cup qualifying campaigns as they’ve now lost their last eight matches on their travels which now spans three qualifying campaigns!
In addition, they’ve failed to keep a single clean sheet during this eight-match sequence as well as failing to score on five occasions.
I’ll therefore back Sweden to bounce back with a win here to keep their bid for Russia 2018 qualification on track.
