Unlike the English play-off finals, the Spanish Segunda Division play-off final is played over two legs, home and away, to determine who, out of the finalists, Tenerife and Getafe, will be playing La Liga football next season, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Tenerife had to endure a nervous spell of extra-time against Cadiz in their play-off semi-final as the scores finished level at 1-1 on aggregate after 90 minutes, but Tenerife went through thanks to finishing higher than Cadiz in the regular season.
Conversely, Tenerife play at home in the first leg of this final as they finished one place below their opponents, Getafe. Tenerife have one of the best defensive record at home in the Spanish second flight and they’ve kept 11 clean sheets to date. Midfielder Diedhiou (12 goals) and forward Lozano (9 goals) are the ones to watch for the hosts.
Visitors Getafe will be looking for more of the same as their play-off semi-final when they line up against Tenerife over the two-legged final, as they simply outscored Huesca in a 5-2 aggregate win, thanks mainly to a 3-0 home win in the second leg.
A draw on Wednesday night would seemingly set Getafe up for success in the second leg which will be played at their Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, although it should be noted that Getafe’s results away from home have been sporadic at best.
Just two wins on the road from their last 12 matches on their travels suggests that this first leg could be far from an easy prospect for Getafe, and I believe they’ll be more than happy to head into the home second leg with the scores level.
Just two clean sheets from these last 12 away matches for Getafe makes me lean towards Tenerife getting something from this first leg, but I’ll take the handicap on offer for the hosts here.
