Third from bottom Torquay United suffered yet another defeat on Saturday when they went down 2-0 to Aldershot Town at Plainmoor which has left the west country outfit in the relegation pack. That defeat has become The Gulls fourth defeat on the trot in the National League and has left them very close to the bottom of the division.
Following relegation from League Two a couple of seasons ago, it was widely expected that Torquay would at least be challenging for the play-offs if not gaining automatic promotion, but this has most definitely not been the case for Torquay as they currently face a long battle against relegation from the non-league top flight.
The Gulls’ home record stands at a poor 1-1-5 6/16 having lost their last three on the trot on home turf to Bromley 7-3, Boreham Wood 2-1 and Aldershot Town 2-0, and they now face a confident Dover outfit tonight who are pressing for a play-off place.
Onto Dover Athletic then, and the Kent outfit come into tonight’s clash in Torquay off the back of three straight wins in the National League which has pushed them up into fifth place and they currently occupy the last play-off spot, albeit early days of course.
Dover have recently chalked up wins over Eastleigh 5-2 away, a 2-0 home win over Woking and a 3-2 win away at Gateshead which are impressive wins indeed in this division and against top half opposition.
Dover still remain unbeaten at home, and on their travels they possess an overall record of 2-3-2 13/11 having lost just once in their last six matches on the road – that being a 3-2 loss away at Whaddon Road to second placed Cheltenham Town which is no disgrace.
To sum up, I believe Dover can grab all three points here tonight, but I do recommend giving the quarter-ball on the visitors as a draw can’t be completely ruled out. Dover could take this perhaps 2-1.
