Tottenham host a beleaguered Aston Villa outfit at White Hart Lane tonight as they look to chalk up another three points which in turn could enable them to leapfrog their London rivals West Ham into fifth spot.
Spurs come into tonight’s encounter fresh off a 5-1 dismantling of Bournemouth last time out and they’re unbeaten at home so far this season with an overall record of 2-3-0 7/3 having registered wins over Manchester City 4-1 and Crystal Palace 1-0.
Perhaps more importantly though, Tottenham have kept three clean sheets on home turf so far this term, and with the impending visit of a poor Aston Villa unit tonight, I daresay Spurs will be looking to add to this tally.
Visitors Aston Villa now sit bottom of the Premier League two points adrift of second from bottom club Sunderland and a further four points behind Bournemouth as they make the trip down to London tonight.
Aston Villa’s fortunes have been in steady decline for some time now as former managers Paul Lambert and Tim Sherwood have been unable to arrest the downward spiral of their results, and they now find themselves in real trouble with relegation becoming an ever increasing threat to the midlands club.
They went down to a 2-1 defeat at Villa Park last time out to Swansea City and in fact The Villans have now gone a terrible nine games without a win since their opening day 1-0 win away at new-boys Bournemouth way back in August.
The departure of striker Christian Benteke to Liverpool may prove to be pivotal in Aston Villa’s bid for Premier League survival.
