TOTTENHAM v SUNDERLAND – Pick: 1 – 17 January 2015

Kane to do it again at The Lane

Premier League Tips

Football – England – Premier League

Saturday 17th January 2015 – Kickoff: 1500hrs

Tottenham’s solid run of six matches without defeat in the Premier League ended in an abrupt fashion when they surrendered a 1-goal lead at Crystal Palace as they eventually lost 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

However, they now return to White Hart Lane for this afternoon’s encounter with lowly Sunderland with a fair amount of confidence that they can bounce back with a win here particularly having registered strong wins over the likes of Swansea City (away), Leicester City (away) and their best win so far this season, a 5-3 home win over league leaders Chelsea.

Spurs’ home record stands at  5-2-4  16/13 and they’re unbeaten in their last five at The Lane which includes an earlier win over Everton. Also in their favour is the continued goalscoring streak of striker Harry Kane who has bagged 8 goals in the Premier League so far including 6 goals from his last 6 matches.

Visitors Sunderland succumbed to a third defeat in four matches when they narrowly lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light against Liverpool last weekend. Previous defeats to Hull City at home, which was a real blow, along with a predictable loss at Manchester City has resulted in the Black Cats sitting a precarious fifth from bottom in the division, just two league positions and one point above Hull City.

However, away from home, Sunderland have tightened things up somewhat and their defeat at Manchester City was their first defeat on the road in five matches having beaten Crystal Palace and Newcastle United who, interestingly, probably had other things on their minds i.e. wrestling over manager Alan Pardew!

Sunderland’s away record stands at  2-5-3  8/15 and no doubt manager Gus Poyet will once again be ‘parking the bus’ for a point as his side are set up not to lose rather than seek three points.

Tottenham will be smarting from their defeat at Palace where they had all three points in their hand, while Sunderland’s game plan of playing for the draw might just backfire on them here today. Spurs have the necessary attacking personnel to unlock a stubborn Sunderland unit, so I’ll back the hosts for a 1-0 win here.
