New Valencia manager Gary Neville got underway at his new club with a massive point earned at home against Barcelona in a 1-1 draw on the weekend, and he’ll be looking to lift his troops once again this evening when they host bottom of Group H side Lyon in this important Champions League clash.
Valencia are currently third but not out of the race for a place in the final stages of the competition as they’re just one point behind second placed Belgian outfit Gent. Gent entertain runaway leaders of the group Zenit St Petersburg who have won all five of their group matches to date, so Valencia have a real chance of qualifying for the last 16.
In addition, despite recent defeats to Gent and Zenit, Valencia registered a valuable 1-0 win away at Lyon earlier in September, so that will give them hope of a result at their Estadio de Mestalla ground tonight. The usual suspects of Alcacer and Parejo are the most likely anytime goalscorers for the hosts tonight.
Visitors Lyon sit bottom of the pile in Group H thanks to earning just one point from their five matches so far in the competition, but defeats to Valencia, Zenit (both home and away) and Gent have resulted in a thoroughly disappointing Champions League campaign for the French side.
Even qualification for the Europa League is out of reach, so it looks like a very dejected and fragile side that will travel to Spain for Wednesday night’s final group match who will face a motivated Valencia outfit on home turf.
In addition, Lyon have lost six of their last seven Champions League matches and their last win in the competition was an away win at Grasshoppers back in August 2013.
I have to therefore go for the Valencia win here along with covering the -1 line as well.
