The Brazilian top flight action continues this Sunday and my next pick features a bottom half clash in Serie A between Vasco da Gama and struggling Atletico GO at the Estádio Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama in Rio de Janeiro.
Despite being unable to put any sort of consistent run together overall in Serie A, Vasco are favourites to take the points today as they possess a strong home record, even if their overall results have been erratic.
Vasco have put together back-to-back wins just once so far this season, which were both at home, and this appears to be their best chance of climbing the league ladder with a record of 4-0-1 10/9 behind them. The one defeat at home so far was to league leaders Corinthians, but with striker Fabiano (5 goals) up front for the hosts, they look well set here.
Visitors Atletico GO sit second from bottom in Serie A following three defeats from their last four matches overall in the Brazilian top flight with defeats to Cruzeiro, Atletico PR and Palmeiras, and although they’ve registered two wins at home this season (against Ponte Preta and Avai), their away performances have been far less convincing.
An away record of 0-0-4 1/10 has let them down so far in this new campaign with defeats suffered at Coritiba, Bahia, Cruzeiro and Palmeiras, along with a distinct lack of goals which has had a very negative impact upon their results on the road.
But the problems on their travels extend way beyond just this season as they’ve recorded only two away wins from their last 32 trips.
With this in mind, I’ll back Vasco for the points here.
