Vasco da Gama succumbed to another away defeat at the weekend when they went down to a narrow 1-0 loss at Chapecoense, but they’ll be hopeful of getting something out of tonight’s match against 8th placed Sao Paulo.
Despite Vasco da Gama’s current league position of third from bottom in the Brazilian Serie A, they’ll have gained some confidence from their recent back-to-back home wins over Flamengo and Avai respectively (both by 1-0 score lines) which has improved their home record to an overall 2-2-2 4/7.
The hosts will also take heart from the fact that Sao Paulo have performed well below par on their travels so far this season where they’ve registered just one win on the road so far this season.
Onto the visitors Sao Paulo then, and as mentioned they currently occupy 8th place in the Brazilian top flight which has been down to their solid home form which has seen them remain unbeaten in their first six home matches of the season.
However, Sao Paulo’s momentum has slowed down considerably in recent weeks as they’ve gained just one Serie A win from their last five, thanks to a 1-0 win away at Chapecoense back in mid-June.
Since then, Sao Paulo have struggled to find any sort of consistency with back-to-back away defeats at Palmeiras (4-0) and Atletico PR (2-1) along with stalemates against Avai and Fluminense (both at home), while their overall away record stands at 1-1-3 2/7.
With goals coming at a premium for both teams, I fancy the hosts Vasco da Gama, to keep things tight here and perhaps grab a point against Sao Paulo who have struggled to find the net on their travels so far this season. Could be a 0-0 draw, but take the handicap.
