Villarreal will be keen to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat at Alaves last time out in La Liga when they take on lowly Leganes in order to maintain their push for a european spot for next season.
That recent defeat has now left the door open for the likes of the chasing teams behind Villarreal to make up ground, such as Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Eibar, but with a reasonable looking home record that currently stands at 9-3-4 30/16 under their belts so far this season, I suspect Villarreal will re-focus again here.
In addition, Villarreal hold a 4-1-2 10/7 record at home against bottom half opposition this term, and the home side will want to go one step better than their last meeting with Leganes which ended up a 0-0 draw away from home back in December.
Visitors Leganes are currently perched just above the relegation zone in La Liga although they do hold a comfortable five point cushion over the bottom three heading into this weekend’s Spanish top flight action.
That said, Leganes will be wary of suffering a fourth consecutive loss in La Liga following three recent defeats on the trot to Real Madrid, Osasuna and Espanyol, and they’ll need to quickly improve their results away from home if they’re to avoid being sucked into a relegation dogfight.
An away record of 3-4-9 12/27 doesn’t fill me with confidence though, as well as the fact that they’ve now gone 12 matches without a win on the road. If Villrreal can score the first goal, then the likelihood of Leganes falling to defeat increases drastically…
