The international break came at just about the right time for West Brom as they’d suffered back-to-back defeats in the English top flight with losses to Everton and Crystal Palace, but they’ve since had time to take stock of their situation and they have another home match in store here today to rectify things.
The Baggies host a demoralised Sunderland outfit (despite the appointment of Big Sam) at The Hawthorns where they’ve failed to win in their last four in the EPL and possess a record of 0-1-3 4/9, taking just one point from the first 12 on offer.
But hope springs eternal with manager Tony Pulis in charge who is a canny operator, and he’ll demand nothing less than all three points here this afternoon from his side as they look to pull away from the relegation pack.
Onto Sunderland, and as mentioned, Sam Allardyce has been named the new Sunderland manager following the departure of Dick Advocaat who only lasted eight matches, which is possibly the shortest tenure of a Black Cats manager for some time.
With just three points to their name from the first 24 on offer, Sunderland find themselves second from bottom and it’s Big Sam’s task to try and lift the gloom around the ironically named Stadium of Light.
But Sunderland possess a similarly poor away record of 0-1-3 4/11 having suffered back-to-back defeats at Bournemouth and Manchester United (both to nil) as goals continue to come at a premium for the visitors. By the way, Sunderland have registered just one away win from their last 15 trips in the EPL.
Today’s game represents a great chance for West Brom to bounce back on home turf, so I’ll proceed with caution and give the quarter-ball on the hosts who could win this perhaps 1-0.
