Wigan Athletic maintained their early promotion form in League One at the weekend when they beat lowly Shrewsbury Town 1-0 at the DW Stadium which moved The Latics up into fourth spot and four points behind league leaders Coventry City.
Wigan have won five of their last six matches as they’ve now made up ground on the leading teams in the division following a run of four stalemates which cost them early ground in the top placings of League One.
But Wigan now appear to have found a cutting edge on home turf where they’ve registered three wins on the trot with victories over Colchester United, Swindon Town and Shrewsbury, while their overall home record reads a strong 6-3-0 15/3.
Visitors Burton Albion sit just one league place and one point behind tonight’s opponents Wigan following their weekend defeat away at Bury as things are getting tight in the early play-off places. Burton have returned some mixed results in recent weeks as they’ve managed wins over Port Vale and Oldham Athletic along with defeats to Fleetwood Town and the aforementioned Bury.
Away from home, Burton have either won or lost as their away record of 5-0-4 7/10 shows, but manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink would prefer to be seeing a few more draws at least and a little more consistency on their travels.
The Brewers have lost three of their last four away matches and in all three, they failed to hit the back of the net.
This could be an interesting trend as they now come up against Wigan who possess the best defensive record at home in League One tonight, so this will be a big test for them here.
I’ll back Wigan as they seem a more solid and settled unit out of the two sides.
