World Cup 2010 Quarter Final – Friday 2nd July 2010 – 1600hrs
Holland (FIFA rank 4th) v Brazil (FIFA Rank 1st)
A mouth-watering prospect ahead for tomorrow’s first Quarter Final as Holland & Brazil kick off the first of three quarter-final matches out of four featuring European sides pitting their wits against South American opposition.
Indeed, this tie along with Argentina v Germany appear to be the plumb fixtures of the four, as the Dutch prepare for some samba-style trickery at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
Holland, true to form, have reached the quarter-finals as most expected, but can they progress one step further to the semi’s? I fear not, alas, they will be up against it here as the Brazil juggernaut ominously steamrollers it’s way to a semi-final berth – unless there is some extraordinary circumstances…
Holland as previously mentioned in my last preview, strolled through to the knock-out phase, but against Slovakia, the cracks started to appear in their defence and perhaps they are flattering to deceive in the last 8. With no disrespect to Denmark, Cameroon, Japan or Slovakia, they have had quite an easy passage so far and if there are defensive frailties (as I suspect), the Brazilians will most certainly cash in.
Holland have been quick to stress that there is no rift between Wesley Sneijder & Robin van Persie, but as the tournament has unravelled, the rift that has bubbled away under the surface might just come to a head in this match – but quality opposition can do that to a side that is fragile in team spirit. I’m aware that I’ve changed my tune with regards to this but there is no smoke without fire as the saying goes.
Van Persie up front on his own appears to be no match for the Brazilian centre-backs Juan and Lucio, while Holland’s best chance may well come from Arjen Robben who finds fitness at the latter stages of the tournament (coincidence??) Van Bommel and De Jong whilst proving adept at the defensive side of midfield will need to start creating and bossing the midfield against the likes of Kaka and Gilberto Silva, a tall order indeed.
Brazil also possess the almost forgotten man in football, Robinho. Along with Kaka and Fabiano, Robinho also can be clinical in front of goal, and when you compare the likes of Kuyt and Van Persie, they are in a different league.
So, to summarise, it looks like the Dutch will have to be content with a losing quarter-final place again, and should consolidate their position of fourth or thereabouts in the FIFA rankings as a result.
