In the Europa League, my next pick features home side and runaway group leaders Zenit Petersburg taking on Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stadion Petrovskiy as Zenit look to maintain their impressive 100% record in the group phase.
The Russian side have secured wins in all four of their Group D matches so far having registered wins at tonight’s opponents Maccabi Tel Aviv in a 4-3 win away from home, a 5-0 thrashing of AZ Alkmaar at home along with back-to-back wins over Irish outfit Dundalk in the home and away fixtures.
Zenit now hold a commanding 8-point lead over Maccabi and Dundalk who are now fighting it out for that coveted second position in the group while AZ Alkmaar look destined to drop out altogether.
Onto Maccabi Tel Aviv and the visitors have recovered somewhat from their opening back-to-back defeats in Group D with losses to Zenit and Dundalk as they’ve since registered a 2-1 win at AZ Alkmaar which was followed by a 0-0 draw at home against the same opponents.
Maccabi now face a tough assignment in Russia on Thursday night as they look to contain the hosts who have scored 13 goals from their first four matches in this group and have already qualified for the knock-out stages.
A previous 1-0 defeat away at Dundalk perhaps show a bit of a weakness on the side of Maccabi Tel Aviv particularly away from home, and if there are any deficiencies, Zenit are likely to exploit these tonight.
