2013 F1 Spanish Grand Prix Betting Odds and Preview
Will Ferrari's Alonso taste success on home soil?11th May 2013 / Lee A Jackson
It is off to Spain this weekend as F1 betting races back into action for the Spanish Grand Prix. There will naturally be a lot of attention being placed on home grown talent Fernando Alonso in his Ferrari. It has been a long time since the Spaniard has stood on top of the podium at his home race. The only time he has tasted success was back in 2006 when he was driving for Renault. He could do with a win as he is already trailing Drivers’ World Championship leader Sebastian Vettel by thirty points. Alonso’s big moment in the early stages of the 2013 F1 season came at the Chinese Grand Prix when he put in a dominant drive to finish comfortably ahead of Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen. But that was only his second podium finish out of the four races this season. But Alonso’s Ferrari was showing a lot of speed and promise during practice.

It could make Alonso some great value as favourite for the race, and starts at 2/1 with online bookmaker BetFred. But there is only narrow favouritism for the Ferrari driver in Spanish Grand Prix betting as Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel is breathing right down his neck. The German has taken three podium finishes this season, two of them victories. He put in a tremendously dominant run at the Bahrain Grand Prix in the last race, which could have ominous bearings for the rest of the title contenders. Vettel laid down an early mark on Friday’s practice, putting in the fastest time as well. It is likely that he’ll be very near, if not at the very front of the grid for the race (being 7/4 favourite at BetFred to take Pole Position) and that makes him a strong prospect. Vettel’s sole win at the Spanish Grand Prix came in the 2001 season.

Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen is still chugging along, and he is a previous winner of the race, back in 2008 when he was with Ferrari. Raikkonen is just ten points adrift of leader Vettel this season, and genuinely looks to be the German’s main challenger. One win and two second place finishes this season has seen the Lotus deliver a lot of consistency and pace. Whether it is quite enough to get the beating of the Red Bull remains a big question though but he should be one of the front runners for 2013 Spanish Grand Prix betting.
Lewis Hamilton has been hearing all sorts of positivity from the Mercedes camp, who believe that they have enough time to still give the British number one a genuine title shot. They have certainly performed above and beyond what anyone had expected them to do so ahead of the season. The development has been more rapid than expected and Hamilton seems to be dragging the team forward by the scruff of its neck, putting in some gritty performances this season in taking a coupe of third place finishes to put himself third in the Drivers’ World Championship title after four races.
