ATP Queen’s Tennis Betting Odds and Preview

Murray's Wimbledon quest starts at Queens

10th June 2013 / Lee A Jackson
Andy Murray

ATP Queens Betting Info
The grass court swing of the season is upon us, with the action starting at the famous Queen’s Club. With four top ten players in the mix as well, it should be a competitive week on the grass. The grass season is considerably shorter than the other surfaces on the ATP so there isn’t a lot of time to bed in before the Wimbledon championships will be surfacing towards the end of the month. This is a very important primer ahead of the third Grand Slam of the year.

ATP Queens Betting Favourite
It is not too surprising that Britain’s Andy Murray goes as favourite for Queen’s. Britain’s number one missed the French Open after picking up a back injury at Monte Carlo, so it will be interesting to see how he goes this week in an important build up to Wimbledon. Murray at least has the advantage of getting some extra training time in on grass, which is hard to transition to, especially coming off clay. Will that benefit Murray or will the lack of competitive action over the past couple of weeks hinder him? He is a former Queen’s champion, winning in 2009 and 2011, so another two years on from his last title, will he be back in the winner’s circle. Bombed in the second round against Nicolas Mahut last season. Had a disappointing clay court swing, but will be better on grass. Murray is 7/4 favourite at online bookmaker Paddy Power.

Other Contenders
Berdych, who beat Andy Murray at Madrid back in May, goes as second seed. He has yet to win a title this season, but has been producing some pretty decent play. The Czech star reached back to back semi finals in Madrid and Rome prior to the French Open, where he lost in a big five set battle against Gael Monfils in the first round. So he too should be well rested and should have used the time to adjust to grass. He has only played here once before, back in 2005 and lost in the first round. Has massively improved since back then though of course, and the world number six makes a decent prospect here.

Frenchman Jo Wilfried Tsonga should carry some confidence over from his form at the French Open. Tsonga made a run to the semi finals there in a really spirited tournament. He also has a bit of history at Queen’s as well, reaching the final back in 2011, losing to Andy Murray in three sets. He beat Rafael Nadal along the way to the final though. Goes in the same half of the draw as Murray, so a potential semi final match up there and a danger in the field.

Reigning champion Marin Cilic is back to defend his title and goes in Berdych’s half of the draw as fifth seed only. The Croatian not really having produced much form this season at all. But one of the most interesting contenders in the field will be big Argentine Juan Martin del Potro. He has missed most of the clay swing of the season, so will be making a return. Has a big weapon of a massive serve up his sleeve. Started the season with great form but started to drift when the clay swing came in, and then picked up an injury. Shouldn’t be too much to stop him at least making a quarter final run though.
