BDO Darts World Championships
January 2nd – 10th, 2010
Lakeside, Surrey
While the showcase of the one man darting machine Phil Taylor continues to grab the headlines of the PDC World Darts Championships at Alexandra Palace, Dart’s other main body gets their equivalent of the World Championships under way on January 2nd. Probably the most famous Darts venue in the world, Surrey’s Lakeside, hosts the 2010 tournament with the winner looking to net themselves a £100,000 prize. The BDO may not have as many of the big names competing, certainly household names like Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, John Part, Kevin Painter and Adrian Lewis don’t crop up as often in the BDO World Darts Championships, but there is still a wealth of talent participating.
Ted Hankey will be the name on everyone’s lips as the 32 competitors go head to head in the televised tournament. Who doesn’t recall at some point in their life, sitting down and watching the action from the Lakeside on BBC2 at the turn of the new year? The BDO Darts World Championships run from January 2nd to January 10th, with a men’s field which is predominantly Englishmen. Of the top sixteen men, only five are not from England. There were these three Scotsman, a Swede and a Dutchman, see…
It is England’s Ted Hankey who is the current reigning BDO World Darts Champion, and he kicks off the defence of his title against his friend Gary Robson. Despite being the current holder, there is a lot of money going on Martin Adams, who is favoured heavily by the Bookmakers. This will be Adams’ 17th consecutive year at the Lakeside, having put in more appearances than any other player. Despite having only ever won the championship once in 2007, he has consistently put in good performances and reached has reached the semi final stage for the past two years. That will always make him a threat.
Other high contenders at the Lakeside will be Scott Waites and Tony O’Shea (who is ranked number 1), and Darryl Fitton is seriously playing his way into contention after winning the last BDO tournament in Holland, bagging himself a coveted 9 nine dart finish along the way.
