Betfred boss Fred Done gambles on paying out early on Man United winning the league

Done risks early payout again

After Manchester United opened up a 12 point gap at the top of the Premier League table on the weekend, online betting site Betfred boss, Fred Done has been at it again.

Unhindered by previous occasions when he has been burnt, Done has decided to pay out early on Manchester United winning this year’s Premier League title. Twelve points clear at the top of the table with 12 games to go seems to be enough for avid Red Devils fan Done, who has settled bets on United winning the league. Twice before he has done this and has gotten his fingers burnt.

Indeed, betting site Betfred did it last year, paying out early on Manchester United only to see Manchester City steal the title from under the noses of the Red Devils with just about the last kick of the season. That cost Betfred a lot of money, and naturally some United fans think that they were perhaps jinxed by the trigger happy Betfred boss. Last season’s title winning effort by Manchester City cost Betfred well over a £1 million because of Done’s brave decision. Back in 1998, Arsenal overturned what looked like an unassailable situation to take the title away from Manchester United, again costing the bookie.

But twelve points is a massive gap, and Fred Done has seen what he believes is enough in the Red Devils performances to suggest that they aren’t going to throw it away this time. Done will be keeping his fingers crossed this season that United do go on to claim their 20th league title.

“After it all went wrong last year, my missus made me promise to never do it again,” said Done, “but with United 12 points clear with just 12 games left the title race is over – so my punters can collect their dough on United.”

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power though were the first in line to settle bets on United winning the league this season. Even before the Red Devils had finished beating Everton comfortably on Sunday, Paddy Power had already paid out on the market for United to finish top.

A spokesman for the firm declared: “The fat lady might not be singing yet but she’s definitely getting warmed up.

“We can’t see United letting their lead slip and, with Real Madrid to come in midweek (Champions League first-leg), we thought we’d take some of the pressure off Fergie (Ferguson) and give punters an early payday.”
