Spartak Moscow v Chelsea Betting and Match Preview

Interesting match up this one, and perhaps not as forgone a conclusion as one may initially think. This is because Chelsea look edgy away from home, and Spartak having won both of their opening match. There is a tussle for the top spot in the group between these two, and someone may just get a big upper hand on Tuesday night. The two sides have not met before in Europe, and for Chelsea, they will have bitter memories of the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. It is where they lost the 2007/08 Champions League final against Manchester United in a penalty shoot out. John Terry and Nicolas Anelka missed from the spot on that enduring night, but now they head back to the scene of the crime with a new man in charge. Carlo Ancelotti will be expecting and demanding a win, and wondering why the away goals have dried up at home. Moscow are no slouches though, and showed great resilience in beating Marseille away in their opening Champions League fixture this year. Chelsea will start the football betting as favourites, and that is understandable, but there is just a question mark over their away form, and their ability to play with as much confidence as they do at home. The Blues will be hoping that Drogba is fit enough to carry some threat, or else all eyes will be on Anelka, who has hit three goals in Chelsea’s opening two Champions League matches. These questions are reflected in the bookmakers price and you won’t see Chelsea at that price very often. They are worth backing though, simply because of their defence and ability to hang on to a 1-0 win if it comes their way. Looking at the stats from their first two matches, there isn’t much to choose between the two sides, in terms of goals scored, fouls and attempts on target. There are strong indications of a draw here, so look for decent prices on Moscow in the plus. A Chelsea -1 Asian Handicap is well priced at 21/10 at Bet365. A winning margin of one goal for Chelsea is 11/4 at Bet365, while a Score Draw is 4/1 at Ladbrokes.

Spartak Moscow v Chelsea Betting Tip: Halftime/Fulltime bet Draw/Chelsea 19/4 at Unibet

Spartak Moscow Betting:

Not the greatest record in their Champions League home fixtures for the Russians. Their win against Zilina this year, was the first time since 2000 they have won a match in the Group Stage at home (that was against Arsenal incidentally). The Russians do have a pretty handy record against English teams, winning nine of fifteen encounters, losing just four of them. At their home stadium, they have won five, drawn one and lost one, making them difficult opponents. However, Spartak didn’t win a home game in their last visit to the Champions League, which just surrounds them in unpredictability. They weren’t any pushovers though, as they drew against Sporting and Bayern Munich there, and only lost 1-0 to Inter Milan. It’s not an easy place to go and pick up a result, and they will be confident about getting something out of the match against Chelsea, who have won their group five times in the last seven campaigns. They look a decent threat up front, and Chelsea are not without their defensive injury problems. To be honest there is probably not a major upset on the cards here, but if you want to back Moscow, then you should be looking in the area of a drawn match. Home advantage does count for a lot, and Chelsea wouldn’t be too disappointed with that result you would imagine.

Chelsea Betting:

Carlo Ancelotti isn’t having too much fun away from home at the moment. They were without Drogba on the weekend for their Premier League trip to Aston Villa, and posed little threat. They played out a 0-0 draw, which was on the back of a 1-0 defeat away to Man City. There is a definite lack of shape and penetration about Chelsea when Drogba isn’t prowling around, and it is in these tricky away fixtures when they need the big Ivorian striker the most. The Blues are having some injury problems at the moment, with Alex, Benayoun, Lampard, Drogba all offering concerns, and suddenly the ground is looking a thin with several first teamer’s missing. This is not something which you associate with Chelsea, as owner Roman Abramovic assembled one of the most impressive squads in the early years of his leadership. Despite rumours of everybody under the sun moving to Stamford Bridge in the summer, Chelsea only signed Benayoun and Brazilian midfielder Ramires. You look at the team sheet and see Anelka and Malouda on there, and you think that they should have goals, but sometimes Chelsea just lack that get up and go, that drive to push on and overwhelm teams by any means when the pretty stuff isn’t working. They were held comfortably by Villa, and now face a tricky away match in Moscow. Chelsea don’t have much experience in Russia, having only played there once in the Champions League, when they won 1-0 against CSKA Moscow back in the 2004/05 Champions League group stage. Anelka is worth looking at in the goalscorer markets for this one, as he always shows up a lot more in Champions League matches than he does in the Premier League. If Drogba’s not fit, then he may carry most of the goal scoring weight upon his shoulders again. He’s a different player in Europe, and well worth a punt. The thing about Chelsea, is that they remain defensively sound enough to shut out most teams, but away from home they lose that goal scoring touch, which makes a draw a viable option for your football betting here. Chelsea should win, as they look to make it three wins out of three after beating Zilina and Marseille. They will create chances, it is down to having anyone sharp enough to finish them off on the night. Look for Anelka to be the main threat, and could be the difference on the night and he is 13/8 at Boylesports as an Anytime Goal scorer.
