FC Twente vs Tottenham Hotspur Betting Odds, Preview & Tips – Tuesday, December 7

December 6th, 2010 / Lee A Jackson
Champions League

FC Twente v Tottenham Hotspur Betting Tip & Odds: Pretty interesting match for Spurs. Are they good enough to go away and now secure a professional win which will guarantee them top spot in the group. This is new territory for them, so will they be overly cautious or overly brave? Have that good that good middle balance to get the job done. Spurs fortunately, and quite refreshingly, have been quite bold in the tournament, and if they take that approach against Twente then they should be OK. It is a bit hard to see them losing the game, but there is that doubt about them getting the win on the night. So there is a temptation to lean towards a draw. Rather than going outright though, it will be worth dipping into the Asian Handicap market for this one. Tottenham -0.5 Asian Handicap 6/5 at Bet365

Champions League Match Preview: Well, after their heroics against Inter Milan at White Hart Lane, Tottenham know exactly what they need to do, in order to secure top spot in Group A. Because they hold a superior goal difference over the Italians, as they do not pick up fewer points than what Inter do in their final match against Werder Bremen, then all will be good for Spurs. They head off to the Netherlands to face FC Twente, who have only won one match in the group so far. But this is all about Spurs and the great season they are having as Champions League debutants. To come into the tournament for the first time and take top spot over the defending Champions no-less, deserves a great deal of credit. Boss Harry Redknapp has worked miracles at White Hart Lane, and he is on the brink of something special here, winning the qualification group. Spurs romped home against FC Twente when the two sides met at White Hart Lane, but they may just find things a little tougher on mainland Europe, as FC Twente have held both Werder Bremen and Inter Milan to a draw there. There is no reason for Spurs to take this one lightly, and they should have enough quality to at least pick up a draw, but they have to be bolder than that, more ambitious than that if they want to take destiny into their own hands and actually win the group outright. They will do that with a win for definite.

Tottenham, after a sticky opening to the new season, are humming along quite nicely now, both on the home front and in Europe. They have not been beaten now in their last five Premier League matches, winning three of them, including back to back victories over Arsenal and Liverpool. Tottenham were held by Birmingham to 1-1 draw at St Andrews on Saturday, which leaves them back in fifth place in the league, three points behind Manchester City in fourth. Ambition is the key word for Spurs, and with Redknapp at the helm, they are unlikely to be short of it. They were tremendously brave when they played out in Italy against Inter Milan, with Redknapp determined to take the match to the Italians. It did backfire a bit when they went 4-0 down, but they have enough resiliency to make a comeback in the second half. It is this kind of tenacity which should see them through, and which should be able to get them the win they need to see off FC Twente. These are all new European Champions League adventures for Tottenham of course, and they need to be assured of themselves, as FC Twente may have a sting in their tale. Although the Dutch side are out, they have shown glimpses that they are able to punch above their weight, and they do have a good home record. Still, you have to back the extra bit of quality that Tottenham have, because they have a great passing ability in the team, which will get them far. They aren’t as good in the middle of the park as they should be, but they play with width and like to attack.

The bonuses for Spurs is that they are getting back to full strength, with Jermain Defoe and Michael Dawson returning to fitness. Spurs do have good mobility and good versatility up front. They are in good form and looking to get better and better. This will be an interesting test of their character really, and a good European lesson for them to learn. They are favourites to win the match, and they must show that level of professional that top European sides have, to go away from home and secure wins. They haven’t done that as of yet in the Champions League, so there is another step to take for them. What of FC Twente. Well, they are sitting second in the Dutch league (level on points with leaders PSV Eindhoven), so they aren’t a bad side really. They have played good football at times in the Champions League, and will pose a threat up front, as they average about two goals per game in their league. They also have the best defensive record there. You would expect them to be better at home than away, as so may want to go out with a bang. Compare their 6 goals in the Champions league so far to Tottenham’s 15 though, and you should see clearly where this match will head. You would have to lean towards Tottenham being a winner in the match, but with Twente not losing at home in the Champions League and Spurs not managing to win away yet, do consider some coverage on a draw. Twente will also want to secure third place, which will see them move into the Europa Cup.
