Horse Racing Betting – Abbey Guineas Plunge Lacks Substance

October 28th, 2009 / paul

It’s an integral part of growing up that we all learn lessons through experience that we can apply in later life. For example, never play Subbuteo on a pavement – I lost halfway my favourite team down the cracks between the paving slabs when I was eight and have never tried it again. Likewise, don’t take your dog for a walk in a blizzard when only dressed in your pyjamas. Okay, those examples are a bit obscure (and I was intoxicated when trying the latter) but I’m sure you get my drift. One rule I’ve applied in betting which has stood me in good stead throughout the years is never back the winner of the Racing Post Trophy (formerly the Futurity) to win the following year’s 2000 Guineas. Now there is no denying the merit of St Nicholas Abbey’s sparkling win at Doncaster last week. The runner-up had won the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York on only his second outing while third Al Zir had won both previous starts. St Nicholas Abbey, himself, arrived on Town Moor on the back of an impressive success in the prestigious Group 2 Beresford Stakes at The Curragh, a recognised pointer for the following year’s classics. But, and this is a big but, it’s been almost 40 years since the winner of the UK’s final Group 1 race of the year went on to triumph at Newmarket the following spring (High Top in 1972 to be exact) and St Nicholas Abbey’s pedigree hardly stands out as that of a colt that would be entirely at home over a mile on traditionally fast ground as a three-year-old. Sire Montjeu blossomed as a three-year-old when stepped up to 1m4f, while St Nicholas Abbey’s full sister Cascata was best at 1m2f. To me, that all adds up to the best 7-2 (Coral) about the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt landing the first classic of 2010 as being poor value, much more interesting being the 11-4 offered about sportingbet and William Hill regarding his prospects of following in the hoofprints of previous Racing Post Trophy winners High Chaparral, Motivator and Authorized, who all went on to glory in the Epsom Derby. If you’re intent on having an ante-post bet on next year’s 2000 Guineas, I believe you should look no further than general 10-1 shot Arcano. Special Duty, second to Hamdan Al Maktoum’s son of Oasis Dream in the Prix Morny at Deauville in August, won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes on her next start and is no bigger than 5-1 (general) for the 2010 1000 Guineas. Now that’s what you term solid credentials!
