Lisicki win blows Women’s Wimbledon draw wide open

Loss of Williams opens great value

2nd July 2013 / Lee A Jackson
Sabine Lisicki (Germany)

It is all hail Sabine Lisicki at the moment in Wimbledon betting, who snapped Serena William’s long unbeaten run this season. The big serving German showed some fearlessness and resilience on her way to taking a shock victory over Williams in three sets in their fourth round match up. It put an end to Williams’ run of 34 matches without a loss.

It was another massive shock for the 2013 Wimbledon Grand Slam, which had lost Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, roger Federer and Rafael Nadal before the start of the second week.

So now, Lisicki’s win over Williams has blown the women’s draw wide open, because the defending champion was red hot favourite to take the title. But now, having suffered just her third defeat over the last year, the path is open for the remaining eight combatants to grab their chance of glory. There has been a huge shake up in the tournament, so let’s look at what is left.

After her mighty effort against Williams, Sabine Lisicki is the new favourite at 11/4 at online betting site Bet Victor. The 2011 semi finalist, who hasn’t produced any kind of form really this season now heads the field. The ace up her sleeve is a thundering first serve which can unsettle the very best and she is one of the most comfortable players on grass. It puts her in good stead, but she the problem could come in raising her game again after such an emotional win. She faces young Estonian Kaia Kanepi. If Lisicki can produce the same level of tennis as she showed against Williams, then she could easily be in the final. But does she have the consistency?

William’s exit could have bigger ramifications for Agnieszka Radwanska, who is now the top seed left in the tournament. The young Pole has been well below her best this season, but has looked more comfortable on the grass of Wimbledon than anywhere else this term. She is cool enough under pressure to handle things and she is not a powerhouse, but technically brilliant. She will need that nous when she faces up to the flat, power hitting of Na Li in their quarter final match up.

The Chinese star has come to life again in England, after hitting a slump in the season after a strong start. With Radwanska 4th seed and Na 6th seed, the winner of that encounter has to be in with a realistic shot at the title, especially not having to face Williams in the semi final. Will Radwanska be able to build on her experience of losing last year’s final? It could be a boon to her. But all those powerhouses clustered in the top half of the draw, and it is down in the bottom four where perhaps the biggest threat lies.

2011 Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova has been searching for her best form but she is comfortable on grass and the left hander is powerful and awkward enough to have a shot at this. She is not at the level which she was when winning in 2011, but has quietly moved through to the quarter finals. The 8th seed should really have the pickings of the bottom half now, having to face 20th seed Kirsten Flipkens in the quarterfinals, and then the winner of Sloane Stephens (17) and 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli (15th) in the semis.
