Olympiacos vs Arsenal Betting – Champions League Wednesday
December 7th, 2009 / Lee A Jackson
Arsenal, who have already won Group H of the Champions League, head over to Greece on Match Day Six to round of the Group Stage. A glance at the table shows that Arsenal have found life not too difficult in getting through a Group which was a favourable draw for them. They may have had a couple of scares along the way, but their class has generally won out, and have only dropped two points in their five matches, after conceding a late equaliser away at AZ Alkamaar. The Emirates is pretty much a banker for a Gunner’s win when it comes to the Champions League, but they have not always looked their best on their travels.
Arsenal met Olympiacos on Match Day two, when the Gunners won 2-0 with goals from Robin Van Persie and Andrei Arshavin. That doesn’t have any chance of happening against as the Dutch Striker will be missing from the line up for some time with an injury. Arsene Wenger’s misery woe has increased after the weekend, where, during their 2-0 win against stoke. Czech international Tomas Rosicky has now been ruled out of action with a groin injury, and Emmanuel Eboue, Armand Traore and William Gallas all picked up knocks in the same match. This may well tempt Wenger into fielding a younger side to give them some experience after they crashed out of the Carling Cup last week to Manchester City.
Olympiacos need to take this game importantly, and can’t rest on their laurels like Arsenal can. The Greeks are currently sat in second spot, three points ahead of Standard Liege who play AZ Alkmaar. If Olympiacos fail to get a point and the Belgians win, then it would leave them on level points, and come down to goal difference. Olympiacos were the team who were expected to through with Arsenal from the start, and will need just one performance to make sure that happens. The Greeks are sitting at the top of domestic Greek league, with a good run of form, remaining unbeaten in their thirteen games so far this season. How much of a threat they will pose to Arsenal though will all depend on what team Arsene Wenger fields. They will be in with a very good chance of pinching at least a draw, if the Young Gunners show up.
Olympiacos to win: 11/10 at BetFred
Draw: 23/10 at Boylesports
Arsenal to win: 10/3 at Victor Chandler
Betting Advice: Olympiacos will probably be a lot hungrier in the match than Arsenal, although Wenger is a proud man and will expect the best from whoever he puts out. A draw is a likely result, for if the Greeks get physical, then Arsenal may struggle just a little bit, hence the odds above.
