PGA Memorial Tournament Golf Betting Odds, Preview and Predictions
Fine form of Fowler to flourish in Ohio?May 30th, 2012 / Lee A Jackson
PGA Memorial Tournament Golf Betting Info
A great field in action for our PGA Golf betting this week, as the Muirfied Village Golf Club, Dublin Ohio, takes centre stage. This is a Jack Nicklaus designed course and it goes over a par 72. What are the challenges facing the players this week, well it shouldn’t be driving accuracy too much, because the fairways have historically been easy to nail here, but instead you are looking for approach work in greens in regulation. Muirfield gives up putting chances quite generously, it is just sticking it on the green in the first place. Because of the par fives on the course being big scoring opportunities, a bit of extra length of the tee is going to be a benefit as well. Not too challenging of a course, as long as the putter is going well, and tee shots are sticking to the fairway, then the difference could be in approach shots.
PGA Memorial Tournament Golf Betting Defending Champion
Steve Stricker stepped up to the plate to land this one last season. That wonderfully prolific and solid golf that we expect from the American, just has not quite been there lately. He had a very quiet month of May, only putting in an appearance at The Players, where he missed the cut. Before that, he landed a sixth at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans following a couple of non-threatening shows at the Shell Houston Open and The Masters. However, he has a good run of form in Dublin at Muirfield Village. Stricker is on a streak of nine sub par rounds on the course at the moment. He is also generally a solid bet when stepping out to defend a title. Stricker is a decent price at 28/1 with SportingBet as he is a great fit for the course.
PGA Memorial Tournament Golf Betting Favourite
England’s Luke Donald tees off as favourite, and that is largely thanks to the return to his best form at the BMW PGA Championship where he defending his title last week. Has been a solid performer a Muirfield Village as well, thanks to his brilliant work with the irons. Has been inside the top fifteen in his last three visits to the course and one big stat here, which may surprise some, is that despite not being a particularly long driver off the tee, he is sixth on the PGA Tour in par five birdies (or better). With the big scoring chances coming on the Par 5′s this week, well, Donald really fits the bill and has to be in a strong, confident mood after the win he nailed last week with consummate ease. Donald is 10/1 favourite at SportingBet.
Rory McIlroy, has he gone off the boil? He has missed the cut now in his last two outings, at The Players and at Wentworth last week in the BMW PGA Championship. He cut a frustrated figure as well last week, and looks as if he just needs a bit of mental break maybe. He is still one of the greats of the game though, and is he really going to be too far from a win again soon? Surely he is too good to keep out of the winners circle for too long. McIlroy has posted two top ten finishes in only two starts at the Memorial.
It really wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see Justin Rose pick up another title before too long. He had a great showing at the BMW PGA Championship last week and has a great record at the Memorial as well. He picked up the title here in 2010 and has had two other top five at the event. Rose has nailed six top ten finishes this season alone, and his approach work to the greens has been very good. He has been superbly consistent and accurate with the irons to get on the greens. So he should go well again here this week. A very good option to land another win for the season.
Phil Mickelson also has the game to do well here as he is so strong with the irons. The big leftie is having a wonderful season, very, very solid and landed a T7 at the HP Byron Nelson, but took a week off last week, so should be fresh and recharged. Mickelson has hit six finishes inside the top twenty in his last seven attempts at the course, and is therefore naturally a great fit. He really should be one of the front runners on the leader-board here. His all round game is just wonderful at the moment and could shape up for his first title at Muirfield Village.
Tiger Woods has fallen back a little bit into the outsider role after his big win at the Arnold Palmer in March. That win was the culmination of some good momentum on the season, but he just hasn’t delivered since, looking a bit out of sorts, with two T40′s and a missed cut in his three events since. He does have strong course history at Muirfield Village though, with four titles under his belt. So he definitely enjoys the course and has proven himself here before. What frame of mind is Tiger going to be in? Who knows.
Best Outside Bet
Rickie Fowler shouldn’t be an outsider to be honest, but he is going up against a strong crop of players at the head of the golf betting. So that means that the young American is presented at some great value. Fowler has hit four top ten finishes in a row in his last four outings, and has made at least par or better in each round of those last four starts. He is the big momentum man of the PGA and has been tanking along this season. He is in the groove at the moment, and he has a runner up spot at Muirfield Village under his belt from 2009. Fowler is 16/1 at Bet365
