McIlroy with eye on title and European Money List

November 6th, 2012 / Lee A Jackson
Rory McIlroy

Singapore Open Golf Betting Info
It is off to the Sentosa Golf Club this week for your European golf betting and there is a good field offering plenty of value. The biggest story is really not the title itself, but it is the Race for Dubai. World Number One Rory McIlroy is still looking to finish the season on top of both the PGA and the European PGA Money lists. The Northern Ireland star has already landed the USA Money Title, and with just a top ten finish this week in Singapore, McIlroy would follow in the historic footsteps of Luke Donald last year in winning both titles in a single season. The European Order of Merit is on the line and McIlroy is the big focus of attention. Interestingly, his case will be helped by the fact that the five players in closest pursuit of McIlroy in the Race to Dubai have chosen not to play in Singapore or in Hong Kong next week, the last two tournaments before the Dubai World Championship.

Singapore Open Golf Betting Favourite
Little surprise that it is Rory McIlroy, who beat Tiger Woods in an exhibition round last week instead of playing the WGC HSBC Champions. He has big ambitions this week, not only with the European Order of Merit on the line, but he will want to take the title as well. He has been in great form lately, taking a second at the BMW Masters at the end of October before resting up. McIlroy has landed four wins across the globe plus helped Europe secure the triumph in the Ryder Cup. Just to put his end of season form into perspective, he has won three of his last five starts, including the PGA Championship He is just tanking along at the moment and is actually looking relaxed, taking in some time for exhibition work as well to promote the game instead of playing competitively. That should just keep him a strong bet for yet another win this week. While it is a competitive field behind him, it is one which you would expect him to conquer or at least come close to doing so. McIlroy is trading as 9/2 favourite at online bookmaker Bet365.

Other Contenders
Australia’s Adam Scott has to be worth a look here, because he has a tremendous track record at the event. Scott, who is trading as second favourite, has not picked up a title this year, but has secured five top tens in the PGA season. However it is his professed love affair with Sentosa golf club which should put in him in good standing, as he has won this tournament three times before, most recently in 2010 when he cruised to the title. He missed out on the event last season to play a tournament in Australia, but is back to play at a course which fits his game. The course is challenging but Scott’s consistency will get the best out of it. The course management just needs a bit of patience and his straight driving off the tee should put in great contention once again. He landed a top ten at the WGC HSB Champions last week.

Phil Mickelson makes a great addition to the field and rediscovered some of his magic towards the end of the season, landing four top five finished in four starts. Mickelson could just have the patience and iron work down the back nine to make a big impact here. He was fantastic last week at the HSBC Champions as well, ended up tied for second and the big leftie should be a big factor this week in Singapore. It will be all about momentum for Mickelson, and with the generally relaxed atmosphere at the event, that should play into his hands further. A relaxed Mickelson will take some stopping.

South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen makes a good case for picking up a title as well this week. The big driving Oosthuizen, who is sixth on the Race to Dubai rankings, was another one in great nick last week. He tied sixth at the WGC HSBC Champions and produced the same result at the BMW Masters as well the week before. He has just been superbly consistent all season and has taken a win out in Asia this season as well, landing the Malaysian Open. Fired in a tremendous round of 63 at the HSBC Champions Last week, couldn’t quite hang in there over the week as his challenge faded away, but has only one round over seventy in his last eight. A good fit again.

Best Outside Bet
Thorbjorn Olesen may be worth a look this week as the Dane just missed out on a top ten finish last week at the WGC HSB Champions. He rediscovered a bit of his great form which was nice to see and enjoyed a pretty solid October. Olesen took second at the Alfred Dunhill links, a top twenty at the Portugal Masters and then the T11 at the HSBC Champions. Missed the cut in a horrible second round here last season, but would expect him to deliver better. Worth a look at a great price of 45/1 with online bookmaker Bet365 just because of good steady, recent form.
