Two weeks ago, West Ham United were available at 7/1 to win the Championship. The bookies looked prepared to take on the Hammers, despite the appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager, with many of the squad’s most talented players set to leave Upton Park after the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

However, the West Ham owners clearly don’t intend to stay in the English second flight for very long, especially with the Olympic Stadium to fill and the signing of Kevin Nolan has seen the odds shrink to a best price 11/2 (William Hill) on the outright market. Nolan joins Abdoulaye Faye at the east London club and the Hammers could be the team to beat next season.

Birmingham City were another team relegated from the Premier League last season and the Blues are close to landing a new manager, with Chris Hughton the current favourite to try and do the same with the Midlands club as he did with Newcastle United two seasons ago. Similarly to West Ham, Birmingham will lose several talented players although they can be backed at 9/1 (Victor Chandler) to win the league.

As for Blackpool, they are available to back at 20/1 with Blue Square, despite looking anything other than relegation material for much of the season. By Christmas, Ian Holloway’s team were in the top half of the table, although the Tangerines’ form dipped badly and let to a final day drop at Old Trafford. Charlie Adam and DJ Campbell are just two players set to leave, although Holloway knows what’s required to gain promotion.

Not the relegated teams from the Premier League have a good record when it comes to bouncing back up and it might instead be better to go for a team who have retained the nucleus of a squad that did well last season. Norwich City proved that a double promotion could be achieved and Southampton should go well under manager Nigel Adkins.

Another so-called big club are Nottingham Forest and they have secured a place in the top six for the past two seasons, suggesting that a small improvement will see them go close to snaring the title. Perennial play-off also-rans Nottingham Forest can be backed at 14/1 with Boylesports to win next year’s Championship after confirming the appointment of former England coach Steve McClaren as their new manager on a three-year contract just hours after sacking Billy Davies. McClaren was recently linked with the vacancy at Aston Villa but returns to club management in England with Forest, having previously been in charge at Middlesbrough before being sacked as England manager by the Football Association following his team’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008. McClaren has worked hard abroad to shed his ‘Wally with the Brolly’ image from his time with the international team and steered Dutch side FC Twente to a maiden Eredivisie title in his first full season as coach. But he had a less successful time of it in Germany with Wolfsburg, lasting less than nine months before being given the boot. The Tricky Trees are 9/2 with Boylesports and Coral to gain promotion in McClaren‘s first season in charge.

In the same division, Birmingham City are a general 9/1 to win the Championship despite Alex McLeish‘s shock resignation at the weekend. The Blues are already threatening legal action if McLeish ends up at arch-rivals Aston Villa but the Scot is no bigger than 6/5 with Blue Square and 888sport to succeed Gerard Houllier in the Villa Park hot seat. It could be a very turbulent summer at City with several of their big name players, Cameron Jerome and Roger Johnson among them, already stating a desire to remain in the Premier League. Sam Allardyce is already beginning to plot West Ham’s return to the top division and the Hammers are currently vying for favouritism with Sven-Goran Eriksson‘s Leicester City at a general 7/1 for next season’s Championship, with last year’s play-off finalists Reading at a general 12/1 even though they are likely to lose a few of their stars to the Premier League before the new campaign kicks off. Middlesbrough, who ended last season strongly, are 14/1 with bet365 and Coral with managerless Cardiff City rated 20/1 chances by Betfred despite already losing strikers Jay Bothroyd and Michael Chopra from the team that finished fourth last year. McClaren, who has been out of the game since being sacked by Bundesliga side Wolfsburg earlier this year after just 21 games in charge, guided Middlesbrough to the UEFA Cup Final in 2006 and led FC Twente to the Dutch Eredivisie title in 2010 before joining Wolfsburg. He’s the type of high-profile name that might attract West Ham‘s flamboyant owners, but whether McClaren would want to try and restore his reputation in the tough environs of the Championship is another matter. Given that there is unlikely to be a lot of cash to spare at Upton Park next year, Allardyce may be a little outside the London club’s price range. .

West Ham Manager Betting – The Outsider & Betting Odds:

They will have been happy enough to come away from Reading unscathed in the first leg, as Reading won six out of their last seven home matches in the Championship.

Sheffield United v Ipswich

The first weekend in April is normally the considered the beginning of the run in by many clubs and it is no different this season with everything to play for in all 4 domestic leagues in England, including the Championship. Sheffield United are currently in 4^th place, 6 points off an automatic promotion spot with a game in hand, whilst Ipswich are the same amount of points from securing a play-off spot. A win for Sheffield United would surely end the away side’s promotion ambitions whilst any drop points from the home side would all but end their distant automatic promotion hopes.

Over the last six matches, United are the form team of the Championship. The Blades have picked up 14 points from a possible 18, remaining undefeated in the process. Their impressive run of form has included home wins over Birmingham and Derby, as well as a very decent away victory against Cardiff, last time out. Their form suffered a bit when James Beattie was sold in January, but the return to fitness of Darius Henderson has provided them with a physical presence again and results have improved considerably. They also share the goals around the team which takes a bit of pressure of the strikers; Stephen Quinn, Danny Webber and Greg Halford have all chipped in with crucial goals of late, which make them a very dangerous team.

Ipswich have had a completely different season this year in contrast to last year’s performance. After having one of the best away records in the league last term and one of the worst (only winning 3 all season) they have turned the tables so to speak. This time around, they have 5^th worst home record but the 3^rd best record on the road. Their recent form, however, has been poor. The Tractor boys have won one of their last 6 games. That win was an impressive one, a victory away to 3^rd place Reading.

Ipswich are a good footballing side who like to get the ball down and get their midfield on the ball. Their success on the road has been due to their pace upfront and their counter-attacking tactics which have served them well away from Portman Road. A lot of their victories away, have come against teams who allow them to play their football as they like to play in a similar fashion. Reading, QPR and Crystal Palace are technically gifted teams and all suffered as a result of their preferred way of playing. Sheffield United have a big physical presence throughout their team and are a bit more direct than the others. They play in a similar way to Birmingham and Preston who have both been victorious over the Ipswich this term.

I think Sheffield United’s physical presence will hold the key tomorrow and I fancy them to record their third straight home win over Ipswich Town.

English Championship

Norwich City v Sheffield Wednesday

The other team from Sheffield travel to the home of the other team from East Anglia. Norwich entertain Wednesday in a match which has more to do with the relegation issue of the league.

City have been in and around the bottom three for much of the season and currently find themselves  in 20^th position, 2 points ahead of Nottingham Forest (in the last relegation spot). Brian Gunn took over midway through the season and after a difficult start, has begun to pick up positive results consistently. Norwich have picked up 10 points from their last 6 matches, which is excellent form for a side in their predicament. Their recent good form has included two home wins over Plymouth and Cardiff as well as a very creditable away draw at Birmingham (apologies as I tipped Brum).

Sheffield Wednesday are bang in mid-table and free of any worry of relegation. Brian Laws deserves credit after the early season turmoil at boardroom level, which threatened to destabilize the club’s fortunes on the park. For much of the season, their home form was the reason for their league position, however, in their last 6 matches, they have tailed off at home somewhat, losing two and drawing one. Their away form has, fortunately for them, picked up and they are undefeated in their last 3 matches, winning 1 and drawing the other two. Their recent form on the road may have something to do with the players having less pressure and demand on them than they had earlier on in the season.

Norwich know that their home games will be vital to them remaining in the league and with only 3 home games left, and one of them against Reading, they will be desperate to continue their recent good form by taking maximum points tomorrow. A raucous Carrow Road crowd is sure to roar them on and this could be the catalyst they need to record their third win from four home games.

They have overcome their slow start and are now looking to close down Chelsea and Liverpool’s 8 point lead over them.
