Alberto Contador has been cleared by the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation after testing positive for a banned substance at last year’s Tour de France. The 28-year-old has been fighting the finding of Clenbuterol in a sample on July 21st last year, attributing the result on the second rest day to eating contaminated meat. The RFEC’s disciplinary committee had proposed a one-year ban for the Spaniard but Contador’s spokesman confirmed the three-time Tour champion had been given permission to take part in the Volta ao Algarve, starting this week, after the authorities accepted his explaination that he’d never deliberately took a banned substance.

Contador won the 2010 Tour, his third after wins in 2007 and 2009, as an Astana rider, beating Andy Schleck by 39 seconds, but has since agreed a move to Team Saxo Bank-Sungard. Bookmakers remain non-committal about Contador’s possible participation in 2011, however, or the prospects of his rivals should the Spaniard line up and are currently pricing up the event without him. Schleck is a best 4/5 with Paddy Power, while Ivan Basso can be backed at 17/2 with bwin. But there will be no Lance Armstrong, who has finally confirmed his retirement from the sport seven years after he won his last Tour de France title. Britain’s Bradley Wiggins is a 50/1 chance with both bet365 and bwin but he may already be looking ahead to the 2012 London Olympics after the Games schedule was announced this week.

Britain won seven gold medals from 10 events on the track in China and two medals in four of the events on the road. However, changes to the Olympic programme, coupled with the progress of rivals, means such dominance is unlikely to be repeated. Wiggins and Rebecca Romero, for example, are without individual titles to defend following the decision to scrap certain events but will probably ride in the team pursuit, with the men’s final on the second day of competition and the women’s 24 hours later. Mark Cavendish will also be among the favourites in the men’s road race on July 28th and the Manx Missile will be determined to don the green jersey at some stage in the Tour de France this year, though will need more time before he’s in a position to challenge the big guns for the yellow.

The Winner of the Olympic Games 2016 will be settled on Friday, as the announcement is made in Copenhagen. This is the moment which the nations involved have been waiting for, as they look to succeed London in 2012. This is probably one of the closest races for the honour of hosting the games, and there isn’t much to choose between the candidates at the Bookies, and this is largely down to the many factors which are weighed up by the IOC Council. There is still some time to lay your bets down on the winning nation. Here is the lowdown:

Chicago has the benefit of American President Barrack Obama’s smiling face backing their campaign, and they will be slight favourites. Obama was a former resident of Chicago, so who better to lead the popularity campaign? The First Lady has flown to the ceremony in order to help sway the influence over the decision presumably, as the nations will be eliminated one by one throughout a very long day. Chicago gets to go first with their presentation, and the impact of the political influence has been seen in the past, with former British PM Tony Blair a large factor behind the 2012 games. It is essentially a popularity contest, as Obama has a semi play off against the King of Spain, the Brazilian President and Japan’s Crown Prince and Princess, all of which are at the ceremony.

Chicago: 4/5 at Ladbrokes
Slight favourite possibly in the popularity contest, as the States will have a lot of money to throw at state of the art facilities. They have the room to grow and get things done, and with the new President heralding a new paradigm shift in the political and social scene, its is something which could land perfectly in their lap. Chicago though has its problems with crime and the Council might be cautious as being seen as playing Obama lap-dog, and where politics and America go, there will be some controversy, like with the US’s protests over Cuba participating in a 2006 baseball tournament.

Madrid: 16/1 at Paddy Power
Would be a popular choice across Europe of course, and European nations have the benefit on being a more central hub. This ease of accessibility from many countries may play a factor, but with the 2012 games in Europe, and the 2014 Winter Olympics also in Europe, this may count against the Spanish capital’s bid. Madrid does have a lot of it’s Olympic status in place though, as they had made a bid for the 2012 games and so a lot of facilities are almost ready.

Rio de Janeiro: 15/8 at Paddy Power

Just as the World Cup being held in a new continent for the first time, and the hype surrounding that, Rio would be the first ever South American hosts to hold the games. That is something which could bring a lot of renewed interest in the games, and be a publicity dream for the IOC members. One thing which may not be in their favour, is the much reported high levels of crime.

Tokyo: 12/1 at Bet365

Asia have also hosted fairly recent games, with Beijing hosting them last year. but Tokyo brings a lot of technological advances in making the games a lot greener than ever before. They also proved their organisational skills by putting on a great 2002 World Cup, with excellent transport systems.

The final decision will be made on a number of factors, such as the political state of the country, the finances, the quality of the sports venues and Olympic village, as well as things like transport and of course security. Those are just the practical things, and others to be taken into consideration are geography and the emotions and readiness of the winning nation. It’s a long winded process, but as to who will be crowned 2012 Olympic hosts on Friday, there seems a little too much stacked against Madrid and Tokyo, so it should be a close call between Chicago and Rio.

Olympic Games 2008USA and China in a head-to-head race to win the most medals: bwin’s bookmakers rank China and the USA as favourites to win the Olympic medal count (with odds of 1.85 for each country at the moment).

Overall, the line-up of the world’s leading provider of online gaming entertainment will feature more than 10,000 Olympic bets in all 41 Olympic sports disciplines. Particularly popular is betting on the country with the most medals and most gold medals. In addition, there will be live betting on 800 different events.

The US and China are currently vying for first place in an exciting race. Will Olympic host China with a team of 639 athletes be able to assert itself against US dominance at the Olympic Summer Games?

In basketball, swimming and track-and-field, the USA is clearly in the lead. But the US is also expected to win medals in women’s football and tennis. According to bwin ’s bookmakers, a direct confrontation between the two superpowers is rather unlikely, since China’s strength is table tennis, badminton and gymnastics.

“We devote our full attention to the Olympic Games and will again be offering the biggest sportsbetting line-up. Olympic Games are comparable to four or five world cups held at the same time”, explains Kevin O’Neal, press officer at bwin.

The bwin website will present itself in its Olympics design: not only will the logo be adjusted during the Olympic Games, but so will the pictographs used. More information is available at bwin.

Here is a summary of the bwin medal count odds*:

Who will win the most medals (overall)?

China: 1.85

USA1.85

Russia: 21.00

Other country: 81.00

Who will win the most gold medals?

China: 1.45

USA 2.55

Russia: 41.00

Other country: 81.00
