Injuries & Suspensions
Alan Curbishley, who graciously counted himself out of the running to be next England boss, looks ready to take over in the hot seat at Wolves. After getting thumped 5-1 by West Brom at home last weekend, the Wolves board had had enough and booted McCarthy out. It really was only a matter time, after all McCarthy had managed to do last season was avoid relegation by just one point. With just one league win in their last eleven matches, Wolves are just two points away from the bottom of the league. They are fully embroiled in a relegation battle, as they aren’t scoring enough goals and have a terrible defence. So it is going to take a lot of work to turn around the fortunes at the club, in order to ensure that they maintain their Premier League status. The popular Alan Curbishley, who was last in work in 2008 at West Ham, has always been a good option for teams like this, simply because of his experience and the way he likes to play football. Wolves do have the luxury of a little bit of time because they don’t have a match this weekend because they are out of the FA Cup, and so they don’t get back into action until February 25th in the Premier League. Curbishley has a good track record and he seems to be the firm favourite for Wolves Chairman Steve Morgan. Curbishley has reportedly been set up for an interview at the club. So it is no great surprise that Curbishley is trading so well in Next Wolves manager betting odds, with a best market price at 1/5. Curbishley has held his ground after being linked to a number of clubs in the past few years, but it is interesting why he would have passed up other options to return to Premier League management for a struggling team like Wolves.
There are still a couple of other very good names in the running for Next Wolves manager betting, and no, Fabio Capello is not one of them. Ex Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is trading at 2/1 with Stan James in the market, and he has the fighting abilities to get the best out of players. However, Wolves probably need a bit more forward thinking that just trying to survive in the Premier League this season. They need to get out of perennial strugglers mode and get a bit of forward thinking in there. That doesn’t totally sit hand in hand with the hiring of Steve Bruce. Sacked QPR boss Neil Warnock is trading at 6/1 with SkyBet as he will be itching to get back into work and prove himself. You can just picture his face if he ended up at Wolves and survived relegation while QPR went back down to the Championship. That would totally be in the model of Neil Warnock headlines. Ian Holloway at 25/1 with Stan James is a bit of a long shot, but he would be a superb fit at the club. He would drag the club up by the scruff of the neck, but Wolves want proven Premier League experience and that is why everything is going to point back to Alan Curbishley.
Next Wolves Manager Betting Odds
Alan Curbishley: 1/5 at SkyBet
Steve Bruce: 2/1 at SkyBet
Neil Warnock: 6/1 at SkyBet
Ian Holloway: 25/1 at Stan James
Darren Ferguson, Rafa Benitez, Roy Keane, Chris Hughton 25/1 at SkyBet

Robbie Keane could go straight into the Aston Villa line-up for the visit of Everton following his loan move from LA Galaxy this week. He could take the place of Emile Heskey, who has damaged his Achilles and faces a month on the sidelines. Shay Given is available again after a six-week absence but Carlos Cuellar and Chris Herd remain on the physio’s table.
Everton’s record at Villa Park is woeful having won on just one of their previous 23 visits. They won’t be helped by a mammoth injury list. Chelsea v Sunderland (kick off 15:00)

Fulham’s form is decent enough recently and they will have Andrew Johnson back in their travelling squad after the striker has shaken off a groin injury. Simon Davies also returns, but Dickson Etuhu faces a late assessment. Mark Schwarzer will be out until February (spine).
Liverpool v Stoke City (kick off 15:00)

Steven Gerrard could start the game as he completes his comeback from a nightmare 2011.
Stoke, who have failed to score on their last visits to Anfield, have won three of their last four away games and they have a number of injury worries ahead of their trip to Liverpool. All facing tests are Jonathan Woodgate, Marc Wilson and Ryan Shotton. Andy Wilkinson has overcome a knee injury and could make his return to the team. Good news for Newcastle: Demba Ba (14 goals this season) has been passed fit to play despite taking a knock against Bolton earlier this week. The good news continues with Davide Santon also being passed fit and Dan Gosling returning from a three-match ban. Danny Guthrie, Peter Lovenkrands and Steven Taylor remain absentees. Barclays Premier League
Manchester United v Blackburn Rovers (kick off 12:45)

Chelsea v Aston Villa (kick off 15:00)
Chelsea have scored in every home league game this season and should be able to continue that sequence against an average Aston Villa side. Chelsea welcome back Ramires following his suspension causing some midfield selection headaches for manager Andre Villas-Boas. John Terry and Jose Bosingwa have shaken off minor knocks but Branisalv Ivanovic and John Obi Mikel miss out. Michael Essien is on the long-term list.
Villa are hoping Darren Bent can recover from a thigh strain in time for the trip to Stamford Bridge. Emile Heskey is out with an Achilles injury but Alan Hutton returns to the squad following a one-match ban.
Norwich City v Fulham (kick off 15:00)

Chelsea v Fulham (kick off 13:00)
Chelsea haven’t lost to Fulham in any of their last 11 meetings, and the Cottagers haven’t enjoyed a victory at Stamford Bridge since 1979. Chelsea will be aiming to get their fading title aspirations back on track with a comfortable win but may have to enter battle without David Luiz, who is suffering with a knee injury. John Obi Mikel is also out of this clash. Frank Lampard looks set to be re-installed in the starting XI as Ramires is suspended.
Fulham should be pretty much at full strength bar long-term absentees Simon Davies, Mark Schwarzer and Zdenek Grygera. Steve Sidwell is back in training following a hernia operation but will not be facing his former club on Monday.
Bolton Wanderers v Newcastle United (kick off 15:00)
Bolton’s recent form stinks, barring their previous match when they beat Blackburn, but Bolton have beaten Newcastle in this fixture in three out of the last four meetings. Bolton defender Marcos Alonso must have a pin replaced in his foot and will therfore miss out on the visit of Newcastle. David Wheater returns after his suspension while Sean Davis and Sam Ricketts continue their comebacks after recent injuries and are pushing the manager for involvement on Monday.
Newcastle have lost just two away league matches this season and travel to Bolton with Yohan Cabaye in the squad who returns from suspension. Davide Santon is a worry though. He limped off the pitch midweek with a knee injury and will face a late fitness test. The Reds have Jay Spearing back in contention following his recent ban. Steven Gerrard is reported to be back in training following his ankle infection but he’ll almost certainly miss out on this game as he bids to regain fitness.
Bottom club Blackburn will travel to Anfield without ‘keeper Paul Robinson (calf muscle tear). Martin olsson is struggling with a hamstring injury while Ryan Nelsen will also miss out due to a knee injury. Gael Givet has made a terrific recovery from heart surgery and should be back training next week.
Manchester United v Wigan Athletic (kick off 15:00)
The stats speak for themselves. These two sides have met 13 times in all competitions and Manchester United have won all 13. In fact, Wigan have scored just four goals in those 13 clashes; United haved netted 41 times. Enough said?
United’s task is made slightly easier by the fact that Phil Jones‘ suspected broken jaw is nothing more than badly bruised and he should be able to feature on Monday. However, Ashley Young (knee) joins Tom Cleverley (ankle), Michael Owen (thigh) and Anderson (knee) in the stands. Longer term absentees are Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher.
Wigan are waiting on the fitness levels of Steve Gohouri (flu), James McCarthy and Hugo Rodellega before deciding on the squad that travels to Old Trafford.

Manchester City are in superb form lately and won’t be daunted by a trip to the Hawthorns and will expect to claim all three points. Edin Dzeko could miss out on the trip after suffering an ankle knock last week. Micah Richards is expected to shake of a calf strain to retain his place in the starting XI.
Stoke City v Aston Villa (kick off 19:45)
Stoke’s form lately hasnt been too bad and will be hopeful of a big display against an Aston Villa side struggling away from home. Eight of Stoke’s last nine games have featured at least three goals so a goal-fest could be on the cards.
Stoke should have Peter Crouch available for selection again following a recent illness. Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan is doubtful with a calf strain but influential winger Matthew Etherington could return. Ryan Shawcross returns to marshall the defence after a ban.
Darren Bent should return from a thigh injury for Aston Villa. Emile Heskey and James Collins should also feature following recent minor injuries but Alan Hutton is suspended after being sent off in Villa’s previous game.
Tuesday 27th December 2011 - Barclays Premier League
Arsenal v Wolverhampton Wanderers (kick off 15:00)
