Heather Watson

The big excitement of the WTA Tennis betting this week, is over in Sydney, but there is also the Moorilla Hobart International to look at as well. Sadly we have already lost Britain’s Elena Baltacha who took an early exit from the tournament, but we have British interest from youngster Heather Watson. Australia’s number two Jarmila Gajdosova is the defending champion at the event, but it is Yanina Wickmayer and Anabel Medina Garrigues who are going off as top seeds in the draw. Wickmayer is probably a better option than Garrigues in the tennis betting options, but there are a couple of other names worth looking at as options, and that is Shahar Peer and Angelique Kerber. Israel’s Peer is a great talent, but just lacking that ability to get  up to the higher tier of the game. Still, a wonderful player to watch and should be able to put in a good run here, because she will want a good crack at the Australian Open. The field here is pretty evenly matched, with Wickmayer the highest ranked player in the world at 26th at the event. The rest of the seeds are rolling in her behind her from the world 27th to the 40th ranked player in the world. So you can see the level of competition here. What does this mean for your WTA Hobart betting? Well, that there are some evenly matched prices around, making some good value.

The interesting thing here is, that Wickmayer and Peer are on course for a collision in the final, so you will have to make a pick between them. Which one? Think that Peer is the stronger of the two players, she has the potential to head the right way up the rankings this year, while Wickmayer is struggling to stay in the top thirty. Spaniard Medina Garrigues is a tidy player but the bottom half of the draw could come down to an Aussie clash of Gajdosova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Could be well worth dropping down to Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who was runner up at last year’s event and she goes unseeded in the draw, and she will make our tip to go all of the way here in WTA Hobart tennis betting.

WTA Hobart 2012 – Tennis Betting
Shahar Peer: 6/1 at Totesport
Angelique Kerber: 8/1 at Totesport
Yanina Wickmayer: 8/1 at Totesport
Bethanie Mattek-Sands: 18/1 at Victor Chandler
Anna Chakvetadze: 20/1 at Victor Chandler
Jarmila Gajdosova: 22/1 at Bet365
Anabel Medina-Garrigues: 25/1 at BetFred

Dementieva crashes as Jankovic and Wozniacki build for US Open

The WTA Cincinnati Open is well underway, with a veritable feast of women’s tennis to watch out for and to look at betting on of course. This is one of the bigger tournaments on the US hard court swing of the season, and therefore seeds will generally be kept apart until the quarter finals. Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic (9/1 at Stan James) is number one seed for the tournament, and she will be well worth a punt. It’s been hot in Cincinnati with the intensity of it forcing Nadia Petrova to retire, and so endurance is going to be a factor here. Fortunately that is one of the many strengths of Jankovic, who, despite sitting out a couple of tournaments because of injury made her return last week but couldn’t get past Alisa Kleybanova in the second round at San Diego. Therefore she has the advantage of perhaps being just a little bit fresher on her feet than some of the other players in the tournament. Combine that with her supreme footwork and diligence in chasing down lost causes, she makes a great bet as always. With the US Open on the horizon, Jankovic will be looking to continue building momentum. Jankovic has a nice quarter of the draw to work with, as was helped by last weekend’s winner in Stanford, Victoria Azarenka, going out in the first round. Azarenka lost in a classic match against Sports Illustrated girl Ana Ivanovic (12/1 at Stan James). Azarenka, who would have made for a good bet here although she hadn’t had much rest, but had Ivanovic on the ropes holding a couple of match points. Ivanovic staged a miraculous comeback though, and if she meets Jankovic in the quarters then another classic will be on the cards. Is it worth looking at Ivanovic as a winner? Well, she will be out there in the odds, and is a popular draw being a former world number one. She’s far from that, so she would be a popular outside bet but has cruised through to the third round.

Caroline Wozniacki (7/1 at Stan James) saw a return to top form, as she strolled to victory on her home turf in Denmark. The young pin-up starlet of the WTA was at number two in the world this year, fully deserving so after racking up a great year, especially over the first half of the season. Failing to make too much impression so far in the Grand Slam events this year, but like Jankovic, has the chance to build up some great form. She’s not in the easiest quarter of the draw to be honest, as Alyssa Kleybanova, Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska are hanging around there, all of which are in good form at the moment. Wozniacki has good sticking power and should be happier now the season of the WTA is back on the hard court. One to watch for sure and the win last weekend could just have been the confidence booster she needs to get going again.

Elena Dementieva went as third seed for the tournament, and is always a threat and a joy to watch when she steps on to the court. Arguably, alongside Jankovic, there is no better or more graceful player to watch on the WTA than Dementieva, world number three. Supreme footwork and has all the tools to rack up tournament wins, but she was undone in the second round by dangerous young Russian floater Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Dementieva also blamed the hot and humid conditions, citing that she wasn’t ready for it. So, Pavlyuchenkova will be happy with her progress in the draw, and can probably be looked at as favourite to win the quarter, with realistically only China’s Li Na (14/1 at Stan James) in the mix. If you are looking for an ante post on the US Open, then consider Dementieva to bounce back, but here, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (16/1 at Stan James) is quite a hot prospect, being the highest ranked teenager on the WTA Tour (now that Wozniacki just reached 20). Good all round player who can punch well when on top of her game.

Kim Clijsters (9/4 at Stan James) is an interesting betting prospects. At times this season, especially in the early stages of the season, she looked remarkably sharp, but at other times there have hints that she is perhaps a little tired. Has lost some matches you wouldn’t have bet against her, but that old magic is there, and last year’s surprise US Open winner will be looking for more. She hasn’t put in as many appearances as some of the players above, but when she appears, she is generally considered a threat. Seeded fourth for the tournament, she is well worth a punt, although she has a tricky quarter. Clijsters moved onto the third round with a good victory over last year’s runner up Dinara Safina. Clijsters could be in line for a rematch against Vera Zvonareva (14/1 at Stan James) who knocked her out of Wimbledon in the quarters. That would be a great rematch, and Zvonareva herself is another one to look out for. More of a dangerous floater than any kind of odds on shot, but she did reach the final of Wimbledon, but crashed in the second round of San Diego in her first outing after. Hit and miss on Zvonareva, as she made hard work of Maria Kirilenko in the second round, but if she gets to the quarters she will be worth looking at.

Maria Sharapova (4/1 at Stan James) is a little hard to read at the moment and a little surprising that she is so short in the odds. She has a couple of titles to her name this year, but this Premier Level tournament is a huge step up in terms of being surrounded by world class players. Watching her you can see how much she has improved over the year, and looks as if she is really enjoying her tennis at the moment. Comfortably moving through the tournament to set up a match against Agnieszka Radwanska, who Sharapova has a 5-1 head to head record over, so she is seriously worth looking at backing here. A stretch maybe to go on and win this tournament, but following her against Radwanska may pay up dividends, as Radwanska is far the higher ranked player. Randwanska (16/1 at Stan James) is also worth a look to, even though she lost to Sharapova in the semi final of Stanford, but there are signs she’s getting back to her best. Lost in the final of San Diego against Svetlana Kuznetsova last weekend. The winner of those two will probably meet Wozniacki in the quarter finals.

Jankovic and Wozniacki bet highlights for the week

The new WTA tennis week starts with some enticing women’s tennis betting action coming from San Diego where the US hard court turn of the season continues. There was a fantastic week’s worth of WTA tennis last weekend to cast your eye over, especially the match between Elena Dementiva v Maria Sharapova, and young Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova enacting a wonderful comeback over Elena Vesnina to win her second career title in Istanbul. WTA tennis tournaments provide great opportunities for sports betting, and it is well worth spending time on your online bookmaker to pick out some great prices. Here is a guide to the week’s WTA tournaments with betting tips.

San Diego

Jelena Jankovic (11/12 at Paddy Power) heads the field at San Diego, and the world number two will look to continue her fine season. From a tennis betting perspective, Jankovic at the moment is, and has been, one of the best bets to get behind all season. The San Diego tennis betting is no different, as the fighting and svelte Serb goes searching for another title. She has climbed her way up to number two in the world, and the truth is she could have had more success this season but for injury, especially the one which kept her out of Wimbledon. She also picked up an ankle injury in her recent tournament in Portoroz from which she had to retire, so how will this effect betting on her? Well, realistically it’s been a couple of weeks and while she may struggle early on for match sharpness, if she is 100% fit then there is no reason why she can’t win still. She may even be a little refreshed from her efforts this season. She will begin in San Diego in the second round against either Aravane Rezai or Alisa Kleybanova. Both of those have beaten Jankovic, and therefore Jankovic will have it tough early. There is no tougher scrapper on the circuit than Jankovic though, making her a strong favourite.

Sam Stosur (11/2 at BetFred), ranked 5th in the world is another strong bet to get behind .As mentioned here before, the Australian is one of the most improved players on the WTA this year, and she has battled her way up to fifth in the world rankings. She will also enter the tournament in the second round after getting a bye like Jankovic, and Stosur will go up against Victoria Azarenka or Melanie Oudin. If Azarenka gets through that, who is worth looking at in betting herself, then the Belarusian will fancy her chances against Stosur, as she has never lost a set to the Aussie. If Azarenka gets through the first round, then it will set up one of the most mouthwatering matches of the opening couple of rounds. Both players certainly have their strengths, and both are worth considering behind Jankovic. Azarenka, who is looking to rediscover the awesome form of early 2010, reached the final in Sanford to face Sharapova on Sunday, where she was far too powerful for her opponent, picking up the title, the fourth of her career. Azarenka is a big confidence player, and when things are going right for her she can beat the world, but when things start going wrong, she can be her own worst memory.

The Top 8 seeds in San Diego are quite an impressive list. Vera Zvonareva (11/2 at Boylesports) makes an attractive and worthwhile outside bet and she should be full of confidence after getting to the Wimbledon final. You also have Agnieszka Radwanska (8/1 at Boylesports) Flavia Pennetta (20/1 at BetFred) and Marion Bartoli (16/1 at Paddy Power) to look at, plus Dinara Safina (40/1 at Boylesports) who is looking for form, and Ana Ivanovic who was looking pretty sharp last week. Would primarily lean towards Jankovic first and Azarenka if she gets past Stosur.

The e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open

Young Danish star Caroline Wozniacki will grab all of the attention in this Copenhagen tournament, as she looks to rule the roost on her home tuft. The crowd will be behind her, and that can give an edge when looking at tennis betting odds on her. She looked ready to beat the world in the first half of the season and climbed her way up to second in the world. She remains Denmark’s only ever Top Ten player, and it is a little surprising that she only picked up one title along the way. Her form then fell away as she struggled a little to get deeper into competitions. She will start in the Danish capital against Petra Martic who is one of the best upcoming players, and should be a star for the future. On paper though, Martic shouldn’t be ready enough to take down Wozniacki yet, who starts the tournament as favourite. This is Wozniacki’s first run out since her last sixteen exit at Wimbledon, and there shouldn’t be any hesitation in getting behind her in tennis betting for the week.

There really should not be too much to trouble Wozniacki in the tournament, but her biggest threat should come from China’s Li Na, who has graced the Top Ten in the world this year. She has had the upper hand over Wozniacki this year, beating her twice in 2010, and should they meet in the final here, it should be an interesting encounter. Li Na has been quite consistent over the season, and is well worth a look in betting. She beat Maria Sharapova in the final at Birmingham just before Wimbledon, and reached the quarter finals there where she lost to Serena Williams.

Realistically the only other two names which stand out at the moment, is Petra Kvitova and Tsvetana Pironkova, more unknown names, but both hit the headlines at Wimbledon where they reached the semi finals. Hard to see either of them picking up a title in this one, unless La Ni and Wozniacki crash. They are seeded three and four for the tournament because of their form, but they are a way short of consistently beating top ten players. If you are looking for a form player in your betting, when you wouldn’t look any further than Julia Goerges who just won in Bad Gastein. She fully deserved her title victory there, as it backed up all of the hard work she had done in her previous tournament where she had reached the semi final in Palermo, and the tournament previous to that she had won in Biarritz. A dangerous floater in the tennis betting for this week. Another player who has been quite consistent of late, is young Slovenian Polona Herzog who is learning what like is life against the top players. Li Na looks a good bet in this tournament actually, but she would have to be second in the pecking order behind home queen favourite Wozniacki.

Baltacha battles French Open Champion Schiavone at Istanbul Cup

We have Britain’s Elena Baltacha to cheer on here as she navigated her way to the second round of the tournament. There she will take on French Open champion Francesca Schiavone who beat Brit Anne Keothavong in the first round. Schiavone is perhaps the epitome of the 2010 women’s tennis season which has provided fans with plenty of thrills and spills and upsets. This means that while the top seeds have not perhaps been dominating quite as much, tennis betting has taken on some interesting turns and there have been some great outside bets to take advantage of. Schiavone goes as top seed in Turkey, but the Italian has not really backed up her surprise Grand Slam win with any great form. She will probably be happier getting off the grass court portion of the season and back on to the hard courts.

Schiavone is exactly the sort of highly ranked opponent who Baltacha can bring down. The British tennis star has had a wonderful season, and it’s always nice to get behind the home based talent. She has claimed a couple of major scalps this season, and she is such a gritty and determined player that she really can take higher ranked players to the wire. Schiavone will be favourite for the match, but she probably is not expecting a pushover. Baltacha came through a tough first round match against a Turkish wildcard, which will probably have given her a great workout. Sadly didn’t make an impact at Wimbledon, but look for her to get better. Baltacha is well worth a punt against top seed Schiavone. Already some seeds have fallen at the Istanbul Cup, notably second seed Petra Kvitova who went out in three sets. The ousting of Kvitova, who has been in good form lately including a semi final appearance at Wimbledon, has left a pretty good passage through to the latter stages for young Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Pavlyuchenkova is a great prospect, and punches hard. She stormed through the first round losing just one game in a 6-1 6-0 victory. She won her first WTA Tour title this year, and waiting for her to back that up. One good outside bet  to look at is Anastasija Sevastova, who beat Kvitova in the first round. If you like betting with form then she is a good  who has reached two quarterfinals in the last three weeks. She is a player on the up and like Pavlyuchenkova, won her first and only WTA Tour title this year. Defending champion in Turkey is Vera Dushevina, who needed to dig deep to get through a tough first round match. Another Tour title which is wide open. All eyes on Baltacha and then Pavlyuchenkova in the primary tennis betting though.

Stanford, California Bank of the West Classic

This WTA Premier Tour event on the hard court is a great one to watch, with some top names and fan favourites at the event. There’s not been too much trouble for the seeds so far, because these are players ranked higher in the world than in the Istanbul Cup. In California, there are two top ten ranked players in Samantha Stosur and Elena Dementieva and then a most of the players making up the teens in the list of World Rankings, from world 15 Maria Sharapova to world 18 Victoria Azarenka. But let’s start our tennis betting by looking after former world number one Ana Ivanovic, who is still trying to rediscover the sort of sparkling and consistent form that took her to the top of the world a couple of years ago. She suffered a huge downturn in fortune but is on the rise again. She has shown glimpses this season that she can add to her eight career titles, but just can’t quite make it. If she continues, in twelve months time she’ll probably be a bigger threat. But the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model had a great victory over Alisa Kleybanova in the first round, and she could be on course to meet a personal favourite in Victoria Azarenka. It was a pretty good mental victory for Ivanovic, who had lost the two previous meetings against Kleybanova heavily.

Victoria Azarenka has had a troubled season after looking ready to beat the world in the early stages of the season. She has really struggled for form in the second half of the season and should be ranked much higher in the world if she could rediscover that. She is a very dangerous, passionate and feisty player though, and definitely has potential to go all of the way. Tournament fourth seed Marion Bartoli should meet Ivanovic in the second round, and the winner of that would play Azarenka in the quarter finals if she gets there. An Ivanovic v Azarenka match has a certain ring about it that makes for an attractive prospect to watch. Maria Sharapova has a tough first round match against Jie Zheng, but Sharapova, seeded fifth for the tournament, just like Ivanovic (but on a more consistent scale), has shown signs that she is really getting on top of her game again this season. Hasn’t played a great deal this season, but has picked up two titles. If she comes in strong in the first round, she will be a threat in the draw. She is on course to meet another personal favourite in Elena Dementieva who is always worth looking at in tennis betting. World number six was a strong bet for the French Open until she had to retire in the semi finals, and injury which cost her her place at Wimbledon. Still, she is such a graceful and strong player, and has been a good world top ten for the past seven years or so. The only question about her will be her injury and her match sharpness. Watching her, it’s hard not to want her to win.

We should mention the top seed, Australia’s Samantha Stosur, who is one of the most improved players on the WTA Tour this year. She has had a great year and defied some expectations and climbed her way back up the world rankings. She’s also a great doubles player, and is currently sitting as world number five after winning her second WTA Tour title this year. Having a 35-10 match record for the season is pretty good percentages to back in your tennis betting, and she’ll be looking to make up for the shock of a first round defeat at Wimbledon when she was being tipped to win the title. Should easily be a safe bet for a quarter final appearance, but realistically any less than a semi final berth would be a disappointment for the Aussie. A very strong bet is Stosur in a strong field, expect good performances from Ivanovic as well as Sharapova. They’ll both be good prices in the betting for the tournament. Azarenka and Dementieva should be stronger bets, but there is a question over consistency and match sharpness for both, not quality.

Pennetta and Szavay edging betting in close tennis finals

As our tennis betting tips suggested yesterday, the finals in Prague and Palermo of the WTA Tour this week, will throw up some great matches. As predicted, the final in Prague sees Barbora Zahlavova Strycova  v Agnes Szavay go for glory, and the final of Palermo has the fascinating match of Flavia Pennetta v Kaia Kanepi.

Palermo
Italian Flavia Pennetta will be favourite to defend her crown at Palermo, as she has breezed through the competition this year. She beat Julia Goerges in their semi final match by a convincing scoreline of 6-0 6-4. The experienced Pennetta was simply too strong, and now she will face the inexperienced (at least in terms of Tour titles won), Kaia Kanepi in the final. Pennetta has nine career tour titles, while Kanepi has none. Kanepi has really stepped on the gas lately, putting in some magnificent performances at Wimbledon, beating Sam Stosur along the way. She was equally dominant in her semi final, winning out 6-3 6-2 against Wildcard Romina Oprandi, and is carrying great form at the moment, especially after taking out Aravane Rezai in the Quarter Finals. A little tough to call this one, but Kanepi would be the feel good victor, as this would be her first tour title, and would give her some rewards for the step up in quality tennis she has been playing of late. Hard to back against the experience of Pennetta in situations like this though, especially with the home crowd behind her. Should be a close match, but Pennetta to edge it. Pennetta holds a 3-2 head to head record over the young Estonian, but they haven’t played since 2008.

Flavia Pennetta to win: 2/5 at William Hill
Kaia Kanepi to win: 9/4 at Bet365

Prague
Agnes Szavay and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova go head to head for the first time on tour, as they contest the final in Prague on Sunday. This is the first WTA Tour final for the young Czech Strycova, as she beat the veteran experience of match favourite Patty Schnyder. The Swiss veteran was expected to win, as she is a good clay court player, and had reached the final of Budapest recently (where she lost incidentally to Szavay). Her win gave the home fans something to cheer about, but young Hungarian Agnes Szavay put the mockers on the hopes of an all Czech final in Prague, after beating Czech Lucie Hradecka in their semi final. Szavay looked in top shape as she won 6-2 6-4. This is a tough call as well, as there’s nothing much to chose between them. Szavay is ranked 49th in the world, Strycova 52nd. Szavay probably just has the edge looking at match records this year, and her recent win in Budapest may just be pushing the 21 year old forwards in her game a little more.

Agnes Szavay to win: 4/8 at William Hill
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova to win: 9/5 at Boylesports

Pennetta to rule Palermo, while all Czech final in Prague a possibility

Palermo, Italy
Italian Flavia Pennetta has seen her route to the title in Palermo open up just a little bit more, as second seed Aravane Rezai fell in the quarter finals to Wildcard Romina Oprandi. This leaves top seed Pennetta, playing in her home country, as clear outright favourite now to win the tournament. Pennetta is a pretty solid performer and has picked up one title to her name this season (the ninth of her career), as well as four doubles titles. Has never really made a big impact when it has come to the Grand Slam, but she is a regular around these tour tournaments. She is the defending champion at Palermo, after beating Sara Errani in the final last year. That was her second time at the final, and now she is firm favourite to go gunning for her third. Standing in her way in the semi finals is Julia Goerges from Germany, who won in Biarritz at the beginning of the month. Ranked 73 in the world, she has the tough semi final against World Number 12 Pennetta, and will go into it as underdog.

The second semi final is a fascinating one, after Romina Oprandi shocked second seed Aravane Rezai. That will have please the home crowd, as Italian Oprandi, ranked 90th in the world and a wildcard for the tournament upset the odds. Hard to gauge her as she plies her trade on the ITF mostly, so doesn’t face the top tier players, but it is to her credit that she is where she in this tournament. Rezai has been one of the in form players on the WTA Tour and recently won in Bastad, so it was an impressive result by Swiss players. Oprandi now moves on to play Kaia Kanepi, who made such a great impression at Wimbledon recently. The young Estonian player came from nowhere to reach the quarter finals at the All England Club, having to go through three rounds of qualification to get there. The biggest shock there was that she beat Australian Samantha Stosur in the first round, who was one of the top tips to win at Wimbledon. Kanepi fell in the quarter finals to Petra Kvitova, and that run came on the back of a quarter final place at Birmingham as her warm up, so it goes to show just how much of an improvement she is making. Actually just studying her, while she has been an unknown quantity, the 25 year old actually has a pretty good record this season on the tour, with a 35/13 match record. Expect her to edge this one, and reaching the final will kind of re-affirm the hard work she put in at Wimbledon.

Prague

Over in Prague there is the huge possibility of there aptly being an all Czech final, after some more upsets in the WTA week of tennis betting. In the first semi final we have Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who had an easier route to the semi than expected, as number one seed Lucie Safarova fell in the second round. BZS now goes up against Switzerland’s veteran Patty Schnyder, who always seems to be hanging out these tour tournaments. Snyder reached the final of Budapest at the start of the month, in her best result of the year. Youngster Strycova will be favourite to reach the final though, even though she pretty much only graces the early rounds of the tournaments she enters. In the other semi final, Agnes Szavay, the young Austrian player, made short work of Pelona Hercog in their quarter final, taking just over an hour to book her place in the semi final. Szavay is going into this tournament on the back of a tour victory in Budapest, so is in pretty good form and looks full of confidence. She plays the unseeded Lucie Hradeck, the other remaining Czech player in the last four, who beat fifth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues in the quarter final, in a tight match. So, while the home Czech fans will be hoping for a Hradeck v Strycova final, there is also a strong possibility of there being a repeat of last weekend’s final in Budapest between Schnyder and Szavay. Betting tips would probably lean more towards the outcome of a Szavay v Strycova final though in Prague, while Pennetta v Kanepi in Italy would make for a great final.
