Tennis Betting – Murray can Challenge Federer in New York

August 26th, 2010 / paul

Scotland’s Andy Murray is only a best 15/4 (bwin) to finally break his Grand Slam duck in next week’s US Open but Stan James are prepared to take on the number four seed. They will refund all losing singles bets on others if the Scot is triumphant at Flushing Meadow, where he was runner-up in 2008. Murray’s inability to make the big breakthrough is proving a bit of a millstone around his neck but his many fans will surely be rewarded for their patience before long. The Scot was on top form Abeating both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in Toronto earlier this month and had a valid excuses when losing out to Mardy Fish in the Cincinnati Masters subsequently. Federer went on to success in Cincinnati and won the US Open five times in a row before being beaten in last year’s final by Juan Martin Del Potro so it’s no surprise the Swiss has been installed as favourite for this year’s men’s singles (11/4 with Eurosport). As usual, wherever Federer appears in the betting, Nadal is close by. The current world number one can be backed at 7/2 on betfair but there is just a slight question mark against his recent form. The Spaniard has been coming unstuck when meeting those around him in the rankings just lately and, of course, the US Open is the one Grand Slam event he is yet to win. I’d also be a little reluctant to back Novak Djokovic (a best 15/1 with bwin) on current form. The Serbian is a class act on his day but just too hit and miss at the moment and has never got beyond the semi-finals in New York. Tomas Berdych did us a favour at Wimbledon and can be backed at 25/1 with sportingbet to go one better at Flushing Meadow. It’s difficult not to draw comparison between the tall Czech and last year’s surprise winner Del Potro, and Berdych has already shown that he can handle the big occasion. Robin Soderling is admirably consistent and you’d probably get a run for your money out of the Swede at 20/1 with sportingbet. But if Murray doesn’t finally chalk up that first Grand Slam success, Federer will probably win again.

  • Andy Murray to win US Open @ 15/4 with bwin
  • Roger Federer to win US Open @ 11/4 with Eurosport
