Tottenham v Young Boys Champions League Preview and Odds
August 16th, 2010 / Lee A Jackson
Tottenham embark on their first ever Champions League fixture on Tuesday evening, as they travel to Switzerland to take on the Young Boys, who finished second in the second. So, while Tottenham excite themselves over the prospect of Champions League football, football betting fans can entertain themselves with some early Champions League betting. This is what the London club have been waiting for, a chance to take on some of the best in Europe, but first they must safely navigate their way past the Swiss side in the play-offs. On the evidence of the way Tottenham started their Premier League season against Manchester City, there will be no problem in them get the job done without too much bother at all. They were the better side than the big spending City, and it appeared as if they are have simply picked up where they left off last season under Harry Redknapp. It was some surprise after speculation of him being transferred, that Peter Crouch got the start, and if it were not for Manchester City’s goalkeeper Joe Hart, then Tottenham should have easily won. There looked to be no hangover from the success of finishing fourth last season, and after a summer of holding their breath, waiting for this moment to come, they cannot afford to blow the big occasion.
They have a two leg play-off now against the Swiss side to book their place in the Group Stage of the Champions League. After all of their hard work last season, it would be something of a travesty for their fans not to make it there. This could be the biggest season in the history of Tottenham for over fifty years, and they have to go to Switzerland and not fall apart under the pressure of nerves. Of course, as well as the prestige of making the Champions League proper, there will also be severe financial ramifications if Spurs fail to make it. Although they run on a strict salary scale, participation in the Champions League proper could add extra funds in the kitty, as Redknapp feels that he is only a couple of pieces short of having an elite team. He has certainly turned Spurs around and has assembled one of the best looking, most balanced squads in the Premier League, and if the Champions League does not become a distraction for them, then they should strongly challenge for another top four finish. Technically Tottenham will not get a better shot than right now. They have a great squad, a great manager and have been handed one of the easiest draws for the Champions League Play Off.
For Spurs, it is simply a matter of not making mistakes and the Swiss side could be a tricky test. The Young Boys have a strong record on their home turf, which isn’t actually turf, it is an artificial pitch, which may just suits Tottenham’s fast paced passing game. Young Boys knocked out Fenerbache on their way to the play-off round of the Champions League, so Spurs just need to be cautious, careful and most of all professional. There doesn’t seem to be any danger of them not doing so, and even a draw would be something of a satisfactory result. Hopefully Harry Redknapp sticks by his guns and sends out a good attacking side and does not sit back to much. If they do that, then they can over power the Swiss side and take a giant step towards the Group Stage of the Champions League. Tottenham may not be a side which is ready to win the Champions League just yet, but they are certainly worthy of getting into it and having a good drive at the group stage. It is still a learning curve for Tottenham, but their grades are going up all of the time.
