Watford v QPR – The Dismay of Mackay

December 7th, 2009 / paddy power

Frustrated at not being able to break down ten-man Newcastle and falling to a second successive defeat, Watford manager Malkay Mackay, wasn’t too complimentary about the finishing ability, or lack thereof, of his young side. “Being clinical is maybe the difference. Their guy gets a chance with a couple of minutes to go and puts the ball in the top corner. But that’s where we are at and that’s the group we have got,” he grumbled. He won’t be happy not being able to play Heidar Helguson, who is on loan from the Hornets’ opponents, especially with the Icelandic striker bagging five goals in five since returning to the club. On a positive note though, QPR are coming off a 5-1 thumping from Middlesbrough, but will his side be able to hit the Mack of the net? Mon 7.45pm SS1

Miss World Odds – Coveting The Title

December 7th, 2009 / paddy power

As part of our jobs as Linguistic Communication Technicians, get used to people who use overly grandiose titles to explain what are in fact rather normal jobs to boost their egos. You might already be familiar with a Public Highway Hygiene Executive and you may have in fact been a Cuisine Logistics Management Expert in your time. In an attempt to give herself a better chance of winning Miss World 2009 , Miss Aruba, Nurasia Lispier has gone down that sort of path. She is studying Hospitality Management and is doubtless and intelligent woman, but seems to be hamming it up a bit by describing herself as a “Front Desk Business Agent at a prestigious hotel” – a receptionist, basically. Will Miss Aruba get the reception she expects to win in South Africa? Miss World Odds

Roma v Lazio – Remember Laz’ Year?

December 6th, 2009 / paddy power

When Francesco Totti claimed Mauro Zarate “was not a champion” laste season, the little Argentian reacted by scoring the winning goal in the Rome derby. Totti didn’t learn his lesson though; “He is good, but not a champion. He has to grow.” said the man who’s spent most of his club career as a runner-up. Lazio have struggled to score this season but with those words ringing in his ears, will Zarate add to his Totti-al? 7.45pm ESPN

Dragons v Leinster – Cheik’ The Team-Sheet

December 6th, 2009 / paddy power

Just in case you haven’t checked the teams and were about to lump on, what would usually be a very tasty bet, Leinster in the handicap betting be warned. It’s Leinster but not as we know them. Coach Michael Cheika has rested all of his Irish stars who took part in the Autumn internationals and will be fielding a much weakened side in Wales, but that’s not to say he’s making the trip to hand the game to the Dragons. “I know no one expects us to win but while I wouldn’t say we’re bullish, we’ve got a few good kicking options, and we’re very confident we can compete and play like Leinster do.” Will Leinster be able to compete with a much stronger Newport team or will they be Dragon themselves back to Ireland following a heavy defeat? Scunthorpe v Coventry – A Cole’ Lot Better?

December 6th, 2009 / paddy power

To say that Chris Coleman is targeting a win away to Scunthorpe may be over-stating things somewhat. There’s no doubt he’d love to return to Coventry with all three points but without a win since the end of September and positioned perilously close to the relegation zone, he wouldn’t be too upset with a draw either. The Sky Blues are coming off a creditable draw with QPR and Coleman is hoping that result will get be a turning point. “We must now use that as a spring board. We go to Scunthorpe on Sunday which is a notoriously difficult. It’s a tight ground, and they are at home, but we have to get something, and if we get a win it would be fantastic.” Can Coventry get something at Glanford Park or will they return home with a Cole’ lot of nothing? Hamilton v Hearts – The Lasz Thing He Needs

December 6th, 2009 / paddy power

With owner Vladimir Romanov appearing to have given up on his hopes of getting Hearts to the Champions League, manager Csaba Laszlo’s biggest aim is to keep hold of his star players during the January transfer window and finish in the top half of the table. Laszlo knows his squad could be badly hit if bigger teams make Romanov offers he can’t refuse but he is also warning those players who are eyeing a big money move that speculation counts for nothing. “A lot of people – even here – are dreamers,” he said. “Why? You don’t know if you can sell a player or not. You can sell a player if somebody buys. If you don’t have a buyer, you can’t sell anybody.” Big money moves and Champions League football may be just a dream but Hearts chances of a second consecutive win are very real. Sun 12.45pm

Boxing Betting – Just Take It On The Chin!

December 5th, 2009 / paddy power

Trash-talking is part and parcel of a boxer’s preparations for a fight, but Dmitriy Salita didn’t do much to unnerve Amir Khan with his Haye-esque ramblings. “I come from an old-school gym where back in the days before tapes you would look at a guy and make a decision. The stereotype was that guys with pointy chins were chinny,” the 27 year old said, neglecting to mention a certain Breidis Prescott to back up his claim about Khan’s jaw, instead opting to get his trousers figuratively pulled down by Freddie Roach. “Does that means guys with beards can’t fight? That’s ridiculous,” Roach said. So Khan is chinny? Oh, we’re confused. Amir is confident he’ll win, but we Khan’t write off his American opponent! Sat 10pm Sky Box Office

Boxing Betting – Throwing His Hatton The Ring

December 5th, 2009 / paddy power

Normally it’s up to the promoter to make the mouthy claims that his boxer probably won’t live up to, but in contrast to his charge, Ricky Hatton was timid in his trash talk. The Hitman is looking after the career of Matthew Macklin and although he predicts big things in the future for the European middleweight title holder, Macklin thinks he can do it all now. “I’d take on any of the champions right now including Kelly Pavlik,” he said and just in case there’s any ambiguity about how highly he rates himself, he added “if that fight came my way I’d jump at it. I believe I’ve the skills, the power and the chin to beat him.” A shot at the WBC and WBO champion might be on the cards, but Macklin needs to beat Rafael Sosa Pintos to Pav any hope of a shot at the champ. 9.30pm RTE2 & RTE.ie
