Football Betting – How Sporting

February 28th, 2010 / paddy power

A season that promised much has turned into a real struggle for Sporting Lisbon , but it speaks volumes about how bad Portsmouth have had it that a Sporting player says his heart is going out to the Fratton Park faithful. Pedro Mendes is preparing for one of the biggest games of the Portuguese season as they host Porto , but his thoughts are with the Pompey fans. “I had a fantastic two and a half years there. It’s sad for the club. I just want to say to the fans to stay strong,” he aid, notably omitting to mention anything about missing those bloody bells. The league title is no longer a possibility, but a win over the Dragons would move them up into the European places and give them a chance of Mend-ing their faltering season. World Club Challenge Odds – A Physical Challenge

February 28th, 2010 / paddy power

You’d think that the dominance of the World Club Challenge that Super League sides have enjoyed over the last decade might put an end to the Aussie bluster about how their NRL is the superior competition. In one sense it has, but in another it has just meant they’ve had to be a little more creative with their insults. For example, ahead of taking on Leeds , Adam Blair of the Melbourne Storm subtly took the moral high ground by suggesting the Rhinos were more interested in the physical side of the game than playing rugby. “Maybe there’s a little bit of niggling going around. They did the same thing last year that they did to us when we were over here,” he said in total innocence. Will the Rhinos weather the Storm to claim their 3rd world title? Sun. 6.30pm SS1

GAA Betting: NHL Matches – If The Cap Fitz …

February 28th, 2010 / paddy power

No-one heard Davy Fitzgerald chanting “let’s be having ya! We’re gonna to win the next five All Irelands” after Waterford trounced Dublin in their opening NHL game last week, but just in case anyone was tempted to see it as a new age of Deise dominance, he nipped that in the bud sharply. Turning an interview into the most stressful and dramatic thing you’ve ever imagined like only Davy Fitz can, Davy Fitz explained “look, we have every reason to be pleased with the way things have gone to date, but no one is being carried away, least of all myself”. Galway are missing their Portumna stars, but Waterford aren’t at full strength either, so it’s anyone’s guess Wat’ might happen in the second round of league matches. 2.30pm TG4 – GAA Hurling Matches

Premier League Betting – Feeling Spurly?

February 28th, 2010 / paddy power

Arry Redknapp must be feeling pretty confident that Spurs can beat Everton because when presented with the chance to get his excuses in early, he point blank turned down the opportunity. Tottenham were famously laid low by some dodgy lasagne a few seasons back when they had the chance to land Champions League football, but Arry doesn’t think a virus that swept through his squad during the week will have too big an impact on the game. The club had to close their training ground and have the building sterilized but aside from one or two of his squad, he reckons “It hasn’t disrupted us, we are still training as normal and hopefully no-one else gets it.” It’ll really bug Arry if his team don’t pick up full points at home. 1pm ESPN – Premier League Matches – Liverpool v Blackburn

Cricket Betting – The Kie To Success

February 28th, 2010 / paddy power

Andrew Strauss infamously decided that his staying at home was of more benefit than his being on tour in Bangladesh , but despite his absence, England have kept up the number of not really English people in the team by handing Craig Kieswetter a place in the squad. Kieswetter was born and raised in South Africa and by most conventional measures would be considered South African, but not being from England has rarely been a barrier to actually playing for England in recent years. Bangladesh coach, Jamie Siddons isn’t wishing the debutant all the best and he hopes the absence of Strauss “bites them on the bum” while “the opener they’ve brought in isn’t good enough.” Could Kieswetter start with a Bang by being Top England Runscorer in the 1st ODI @ 3/1 ? Rugby League Coupon – Not So Grrreat

February 27th, 2010 / paddy power

Both of these sides will be hoping the other lot play like they did last weekend whilst they get their act together. Despite losing 30-0 to Huddersfield last week, Castleford Tigers coach Terry Matterson has been talking as though his side are expected to beat Hull Kingston Rovers comfortably. “They are struggling at the moment, but if we look at our last game, then we’re struggling as well. What we need to do is get back to what we were doing a fortnight ago – we don’t have to reinvent the wheel.” True, you don’t have to invent the try either but you could sure do with scoring a few this week. Hull and Castleford are struggling and both coaches will be looking for a positive reaction. Will the Tigers pounce on a weakened Hull or will they be rolled Rover again? Sat 6.15pm SS2

Stoke v Arsenal – Same Old Rory

February 27th, 2010 / paddy power

Arsenal have been in and out of the title race this season more often than John Terry and the pants of women who are not his wife (we’ll get a few more miles out of this). Firmly back in the race, for this week anyway, the Gunners face a tough trip to the Britannia Stadium, where Stoke put an end to their title hopes last season. Unsurprisingly, it was the bionic arms of Rory Delap and poor defending from Arsenal which was to blame for that 2-1 loss…and for the 3-1 defeat they suffered there in the FA Cup this season. It’s now been over twenty years since Arsenal last beat Stoke away from home in any competition. Granted that only covers the two games we’ve mentioned but Wenger knows he needs to win or he could throw away another chance of keeping pace with the top two. Sat 5.30pm SS1

Italy v Scotland – Bored to Tears?

February 27th, 2010 / paddy power

If you believe Cheryl Cole will take back Ashley or perhaps Portsmouth will stay up, you’re probably a glass half full man and quite optimistic. You’re also probably one of the few people that think Italy and Scotland will serve up an exhibition of free flowing rugby not seen since the 1970s All Blacks side. Even some of the Azzuri players have admitted they are ready to “bore Scotland” into submission – known in these parts as the Bill Oddy Treatment. Scrum-half Tito Tebaldi claims there’s only one way to win. “We must stop them from playing. Perhaps this may mean a less entertaining game, but so be it.” The Scots are still the superior side and their performance in Cardiff proved they’re on the up. Have they Scot what it takes to win in Rome? Sat 1.30pm BBC1/RTE2
