South Africa skipper Graeme Smith insists that his men are all motivated to win the third and final Test against Sri Lanka as they go in search of their first series victory at home since 2008 ( S Africa 1/2, Sri Lanka 11/2, draw 11/4 Match Prices ). The Proteas steamrollered the Asians in the first Test at Centurion and looked confident of wrapping up the series in Durban , but Tillakaratne Dilshan’s charges upped their game to win their first Test in 18 months and level the series. Therefore it is now all to play for when the two teams reconvene in Cape Town for the deciding match on January 3 – a venue that has been kind to the home side over the years. Smith is relishing the chance to set the record straight and is looking to let his side’s cricket do the talking once battle commences. He said: “Ultimately, we can train and talk as much as we like but we need to get out there and put things right in the middle.” The South African players looked tired and well below their best last time out as Thilan Samaraweera and Kumar Sangakkara both helped themselves to centuries, and the way they capitulated with the bat led sections of the South African media to question the players’ desire ( Sangakkara 100/30 Top Sri Lanka Batsman ). But Smith denied accusations that his stars’ minds were elsewhere and made it clear that they will all be fully-focused on winning the decider next week. “The motivation is there for the players,” he added. “The series is on the line and we haven’t won a series for a few years in SA so we’re not short on motivation.”

Belgium international Vincent Kompany has no problem with Manchester City’s hectic fixture schedule. Roberto Mancini’s side have a difficult trip to Sunderland on New Year’s Day, before facing Liverpool at home on 3rd January. City are 20/1 with bet365 to win 4-0 at the Stadium of Light and are 4/5 to win the Premier League title. Kompany is relishing the prospect of playing eight times in January though, saying: “I love it but I understand the position of the manager. “It makes sense if he wants to rest and protect his players, but in my case, the more I am in the stadium and less on the training pitch the better it is. “Whether it is healthy thinking wanting to play all the time – probably not – but I always think that players who get the chance to rest are probably more protected against injuries.”

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed injured duo Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon are closing in on a return to action, although the New Year’s Eve tie with Swansea will come too soon for the duo ( Premier League coupon – Swansea 9/2, draw 11/4, Tottenham 4/6). Redknapp, who downplayed any speculation of new arrivals in January earlier this week, has been without defender Dawson since August but the Spurs chief believes there is a chance he could feature in the FA Cup tie with League Two side Cheltenham on January 7 ( FA Cup outright – Tottenham 8/1). Lennon suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Sunderland on December 18 but is closing in on a return to first-team action. “It is good news. They are coming back,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News. “Michael trained yesterday for the first time and he is going to train this morning, so it is great to see Michael Dawson back out on the training ground. “He is a fantastic player and a great guy. “He is not ready to play yet but we are going to get a week’s training into him and he is aiming for the FA Cup, which would be great if we could get him fit for that. “Aaron’s coming on well. He is working hard with the rehab. “He is not ready tomorrow (to face Swansea) but not far away.” Spurs will also be without Ledley King for the trip to South Wales, while Sebastien Bassong and Roman Pavlyuchenko face late fitness tests. Swansea’s Angel Rangel will also have to pass a late fitness test after being withdrawn in the draw with QPR last time out, while defender Steven Caulker cannot feature as he is ineligible to face his parent club.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has backed Steven Gerrard to have a big impact on the rest of the club’s season after he came off the bench to help steer the Reds ( 9/4 – Top-Four Finish ) up to fifth in the table. The England ace came off the bench on the hour mark and marked a fine cameo with a goal to round off the scoring in a 3-1 win over Newcastle – and duly picked up the man-of-the-match award. Gerrard looked a different class in his short time on the pitch – which included setting up two great chances for Andy Carroll – and Dalglish is hoping he will be able to make the difference. “When Steven’s not playing he’s influential so I suppose you can add the word hugely influential when he is in the team,” said the Scot. “He’s getting back to fitness which is fantastic reward for him and everyone who has worked with him to get him back to the level he’s at now. “He’s always been a huge asset for the football club and he’s got a lot of years to go yet and we’ll look forward to that.” Liverpool will be hoping to build on Friday’s success but face the daunting task of trying to become the first team to take anything from the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City next Tuesday ( City 4/6, draw 12/5, Liverpool 7/2 – Match Betting ).

Celtic boss Neil Lennon is braced for more drama in the race for the SPL title after seeing his side leapfrog Rangers to sit two points clear at the top of the league. Lennon’s side recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over their Glasgow rivals on Wednesday night thanks to a Joe Ledley second-half header and are now 4/11 with bet365 to be crowned SPL champions. The Hoops chief was delighted by the way his team performed but is taking nothing for granted just yet, despite overseeing nine straight league wins. He said: “I always believed. It’s come quicker than we expected obviously, but that’s the consistency that this team has put together and we knew that Rangers couldn’t keep their form up from the start of the season. “At the moment we’re in a good place, but this changes nothing – all it does is psychologically give us a lift going into the New Year.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed Gunners legend Thierry Henry is almost ‘certain’ to make a dramatic return to the club on a two-month loan deal ( Arsenal evens – top-four finish ). The all-time leading scorer for Arsenal has been training with the club since his season in Major League Soccer reached its conclusion in November. In that time there have been whisperings the Gunners were weighing up bringing the 34-year-old back to the club on a short-term basis to cover for Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh when they are at the African Cup of Nations. Wenger has now confirmed the club have made an offer to Henry’s current club, the New York Red Bulls, to take the Frenchman on loan for two months. The Arsenal boss says Henry is happy to join and all that is left to do is arrange the insurance with the Red Bulls before the move can be completed. Gunners boss Wenger said: “For two months it certainly will happen. I don’t take care of the agreement and insurance and that is not completed. “We cannot announce anything [now] because the paperwork is not done.” With Henry having scored 226 goals in 370 appearances for Arsenal ( 20/1 – Champions League outright ) he will be seen as the perfect man to try and help them secure a top-four finish this season. Wenger added: “To cover for two months is ideal. He has the experience and the quality. He knows the club and can help the players on and off the pitch.” The Frenchman added he didn’t expect Henry to be match fit for two weeks, meaning he could make his debut against Swansea City on January 14 if all goes well.
