Love fest for US Ryder Cup team

January 20th, 2011 / betfred

New US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III has said his main mission as the team’s skipper will be to make sure the trophy returns to American soil in 2012 (USA 11/10 Ryder Cup outright ). Speculation had strongly suggested the 46-year-old would take over from former skipper Corey Pavin after he failed to retain the trophy at Celtic Manor last October. Love worked as a vice-captain for Pavin in Wales but will now lead the side when they look to reclaim the trophy from Europe in Medinah , near Chicago, in September 2012. Having narrowly lost out to Europe by one point in the last meeting Love believes he has what it takes to give the American team the extra edge they need. “My main mission is to get the players prepared for Friday morning,” he said. “What we have been missing is getting over the nerves of being ready to play on the biggest stage. “We’ve just tried too hard and I’ll be trying to get the players as relaxed and freed up as I can. “I’m not going to tell the best players in the world how to play golf. I’m going to let them show their talents.” Love is a veteran of six Ryder Cups as a player, making an impressive debut at The Belfry in 1993 when and partner Tom Kite beat Spanish duo Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal 2&1 in the foursomes. Love will hope he can enjoy another debut to remember and get the better of new European captain Olazabal again.

McDowell to recharge batteries

January 19th, 2011 / betfred

Graeme McDowell has revealed he intends to take a month off from golf after competing in the upcoming Abu Dhabi Championship ( 14/1 – Tournament Outright ). The Ulsterman will partner US star Phil Mickelson in the first two rounds in the Middle East competition, which gets underway on Thursday, before he heads back home for a rest. McDowell says he barely had time to enjoy Christmas such has been his hectic schedule, and wants to enjoy a bit of time away from the game to recharge his batteries ahead of the rest of the season. “I didn’t have a whole lot of time off in the winter – Christmas flew by in a blur and then I was in Hawaii,” he said. “I’m going to take four weeks off to recharge and get ready for a big spring and summer.” McDowell had a fine 2010, winning the US Masters before he then played a crucial role in helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor and he will hope for some similar successes in 2011 ( McDowell 28/1 – US Masters outright 2011 ).

Giggs set for contract talks

January 19th, 2011 / betfred

Manchester United ( 5/6 to win the Premier League ) veteran Ryan Giggs is set to hold talks with the club over extending his stay at Old Trafford further. The 37-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and there is uncertainty over the Welshman’s future. Giggs is still an important figure in the United first-team squad and chief-executive David Gill expects the winger to sign a new deal for the Red Devils. He said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if he extends his contract for another season. “That will be addressed in the next month or so. “He has been playing well, keeps himself in great shape and is a wonderful advert for the modern footballer,” he added. Giggs has made 12 league appearances for United this season and has featured three times in the Champions League. United ( 15/2 to win the Champions League ) remain unbeaten in the Premier League and currently sit at the top of the table on goal difference alongside their rivals Manchester City. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have a two game advantage over City and will be looking to pull away from their rivals when they face Birmingham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Spanish Grand Prix – Eur Great

May 7th, 2010 / paddy power

We’d like to think Michael Schumacher quipped that at last he’d won something this season, when French prime minister Francois Fillon awarded him with the Legion d’honneur last week. He probably just said ‘merci’. We bet he can speak French. The highest award a non-national can receive from the French people is unlikely to boost the seven-times world champion on the track, though he could do with it after a quiet return to Formula One. Praise came from down-under too as Australian Mark Webber who believes the return to Europe will favour Schumacher. “He’ll feel a bit more at home at Barcelona and Monaco. They’re the sort of places, particularly Monaco, where you just plug Michael in and off he goes.” Will Schuey honour us with a vintage drive in Spain? Outright Betting Podium Finish

Benfica v Liverpool – We Jav’ Nothing To Fear

April 1st, 2010 / paddy power

Journey-man striker Javier Saviola has bravely declared that Benfica have nothing to fear from Liverpool and in-form Fernando Torres. “Fernando is one of the best strikers in Europe, but the Benfica frontline isn’t bad either. We’re not obsessed with him. It would be stupid to forget players like Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt, who are also dangerous.” It’s the guys in row Z who’ve been fearing Kuyt these days, but we get his point and the Dutchman does have a knack of coming up with important goals. Saviola has already tasted European success against Liverpool, albeit with some Henry-esque self-help, and he’s clearly confident of a repeat. Liverpool are no Everton though and an unchecked Fernando could see Benfica’s backline Torr-n apart

Liverpool v Unirea Betting – I Won’t Shed A Tier

February 18th, 2010 / paddy power

When we heard Steven Gerrard speak of his determination “to put smiles back on people’s faces” in Liverpool , we assumed he was talking about getting dumped out of the Europa League and concerting efforts on getting that Champions League place for next season. He wasn’t though and he’s making noises about how important winning Europe’s second tier club competition is to the club. “Anyone who underestimates the Europa League is not for me because I’ve lifted the UEFA Cup before. It’s a special trophy,” he explained, somehow not bursting into fits of laughter. The Reds are expected to notch up a few goals against Unirea Urziceni and backing Gerrard to be 1st Goalscorer with Insurebet @ 3/1 is good call in case Eur slightly wrong. 8.05pm Five/3e
