New US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III has said his main mission as the team’s skipper will be to make sure the trophy returns to American soil in 2012 (USA 11/10 Ryder Cup outright ). Graeme McDowell has revealed he intends to take a month off from golf after competing in the upcoming Abu Dhabi Championship ( 14/1 – Tournament Outright ). The Ulsterman will partner US star Phil Mickelson in the first two rounds in the Middle East competition, which gets underway on Thursday, before he heads back home for a rest. McDowell says he barely had time to enjoy Christmas such has been his hectic schedule, and wants to enjoy a bit of time away from the game to recharge his batteries ahead of the rest of the season. “I didn’t have a whole lot of time off in the winter – Christmas flew by in a blur and then I was in Hawaii,” he said. “I’m going to take four weeks off to recharge and get ready for a big spring and summer.” McDowell had a fine 2010, winning the US Masters before he then played a crucial role in helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor and he will hope for some similar successes in 2011 ( McDowell 28/1 – US Masters outright 2011 ).

The 37-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and there is uncertainty over the Welshman’s future.
