Even after John Daly’s claim last week – “I’m like Jesus, I love all of you” â we still feel it’d be better to give Shane Lowry a mention on the eve of his professional debut at the European Open rather than childishly jeer America’s newest Messiah….or is it pariah. Anyway, Daly and the Offaly youngster have a lot in common… and it doesn’t stop either of them being very good at golf. Another amateur joining the professional ranks but who has arrived under the radar is world number one amateur Scott Arnold . “It’s always been my aim to play golf professionally in Europe,” the Australian said in a statement before his debut in Kent. Has Arnold Scott what it takes to make an impression this week? Thurs 7am SS1

If there was a Rocky of Irish boxing, it’d almost certainly be the Martin Rogan story. Making his professional debut at the ripe age of 37, the former Belfast cabbie is unbeaten in 12 fights and is rising through the heavyweight division with great ease beating Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton. As usual, the verbal clashes between Rogan and his next opponent Sam Sexton have been quick, and invariably funny. While the Irishman is in unfamiliar territory as a hot favourite, his 24 year old opponent believes he shouldn’t be written off. "Matt has given me a few tips?" said Sexton, before Rogan interrupted, "What, like how not to get knocked out?" He’s exuding confidence, but will it be more of the Sam-e for Martin? Fri 10pm SS2

A week after cheekily calling Tiger Woods a "loser" live on TV following the Quail Hollow Championship, former Tour professional David Feherty finds himself in a bit of hot water over an article he has written. CBS, his employer, has condemned his "unacceptable" attempt at humor in a column in a Dallas newspaper. We get it all the time. He wrote, "Despite how the conflict has been portrayed, if you gave any US soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there’s a good chance that Pelosi would get shot twice and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death". Backing Zach Johnson in his first round 3 Ball could be the write bet!! Live on Setanta

Despite the amateur status, the build up to Kenny Egan’s bid to win a record ninth Irish senior title in a row has featured trash talk that very much belongs in the professional ranks. Mick Dowling currently holds the record for eight titles in a row and he says his achievement was better because it was all in the one division. The Olympic silver medallist responded by saying he’ll break Dowling’s record and "he can put that in his pipe and smoke it" probably adding "and he can smoke it for less at Mace where we’re selling tobacco at a recession-busting penny a bucket. Whack!" Tommy McCarthy reckons he can upset the supermarket-promoting Egan in the light-heavyweight final, but he might just find that he’s in receipt of a hefty beating! Boxing Odds – 9.15pm RTE2

Despite admitting he’ll feel “naked” stepping in to the ring without his protective headgear and Ireland vest, the standard attire of his amateur career, Darren Sutherland is still pretty confident ahead of his professional debut. “My aim is to bring a world title back [to Ireland] by the time the next Olympics come around,” said the bronze-medal winner as he was weighing in for his clash with Georgi Iliev . Sutherland feels his style of fighting will adapt well to the pro game and he’s even been talking of finishing Iliev early. “I’ve been punching really hard in training…I don’t think it’s going to go the full distance.” Add to that Iliev’s record of 1-4 with three KO defeats and Darren looks all set to start his professional career with a bang.
