EURO 2020 BETTING GUIDE

Your betting guide for the Euro 2020

Euro 2020 is set for its big start on June 12, 2020. Once again it will be a whole month’s worth of top international football. At the 2016 edition, it was Portugal who walked away as the champions. There is no automatic qualifying berth at Euro 2020, all teams who make it have to go through qualification.

This latest edition of the European Championships will be bringing some new history-making elements to it. It is without a doubt going to be the big highlight of the sporting summer.

For the first time ever the European Championships is going to be hosted by 12 countries. There were actually three different bids that had gone in to host Euro 2020, including a joint bid from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. However, UEFA instead announced that the tournament was going to be hosted across 12 host cities instead across Europe. At the business end of the tournament, it will be London hosting both of the semifinals and final itself at Wembley.

The reason that this has been done, is to celebrate the fact that this will be the 60th birthday of the European Championships. So UEFA wanted to do something special and this is what they came up with. They did state that it would be just a one-off occasion. Other venues playing host to Euro 2020 matches are Munich, Rome, Baku, Saint Petersburg, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest, Glasgow and Copenhagen.

There will be eight groups at the tournament and each of the eight groups will be playing their matches at two of the host cities. For example Group D will be playing their matches in London and Glasgow. It will be Munich, Baku, St Petersburg and Rome which will be hosting the quarter-finals. Another new feature of Euro 2020 will be the use of the video assistant referee (VAR).

Euro 2020 betting details

The markets for Euro 2020 betting are already open and when the final draw has been set, even more will be open and available for punters. The tournament as mentioned, opens on June 12 and will conclude on July 12. While there have been changes for this edition, the format stays exactly the same as it was in 2016. There will be six groups of four teams in the first round of action.

The qualification process for the knockouts of Euro 2020 will see each of the top two from each group automatically making it through to the round of 16. Joining them there will be the four best third-place finishers from the group stage. So of the starting 24 nations at Euro 2020, only eight will be bowing out at the first stage of the competition.

There are the usual names at the head of the Euro 2020 outright winner market. While reigning champions Portugal are 10/1 odds to pick up the title for the second time, early betting had France as the outright favourites*(betting odds taken from bet365 on January 25, 2019, at 8:21 p.m.). They are, after all, the reigning world champions having beaten Croatia in the final of the 2018 World Cup.

Then there are the other heavyweights of the game like Germany and Spain who will be looking for better after both had disappointing World Cup campaigns in the summer of 2018. Incidentally, it is Germany and Spain who are the joint most successful nations ever at the European Championships, both having won the title three times before. The only other nation to have won the European Championships on more than one occasion is France who was crowned champions in 1984 and in 2000.

Euro 2020 betting markets

Punters won’t be short of options for Euro 2020 betting markets. The most popular one, of course, will be the outright winner market which is just backing which of the qualifying 24 nations will be left standing to hold the trophy aloft at the end of the competition. But there will be many more popular markets available.

One of the other most popular Euro 2020 betting markets will be the race for the Golden Boot. Who will finish the tournament as the top goalscorer? England’s Harry Kane won the World Cup equivalent in the summer of 2018 and will he be on target to help England push towards the title? There will be a glittering array of top goalscoring talent on show at the tournament, including Antoine Griezmann, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thomas Muller and Diego Costa.

When it comes to tournament football betting, it is always worth taking a little bit of time to break down betting options into bite-size chunks. For example, you can just focus on the group stage betting at Euro 2020 to start with. Maybe you can pick the top two automatic qualifiers from each of the six groups. Alternatives in the same kind of vain will be the To Qualify market and even forecasts and reverse forecasts in picking group qualifiers. Other popular markets will be the To Reach Semi Final, To Reach Quarter Final and the To Reach The Final.

But Euro 2020 betting will get even more intense when the big kick-off has happened. For the individual matches to be played at the tournament you can expect to have access to even more hugely popular markets, both pre-match and in-play. Betting markets such as the first goalscorer, correct score, scorecasts, half-time/full-time options and so much more will fill up your summer of Euro 2020 betting.
