Polish Artur Boruc, goalkeeper, moved from the Polish team Legia Warsaw to
Celtic in 2005. It was originally a year-long loan from Legia Warsaw but
after nine games, the deal was made permanent in a few months' time. He
kept hold of the number one jersey and played 41 times.
When joining the club, Boruc's wish was to be number one with Celtic and with
Poland and to win himself a long contract. He also pointed out that if he
played with this team, there was the issue of who would play in goal for
Poland in the World Cup in Germany. It indeed turned out to be a big problem
and Boruc joined the team for the remaining World Cup qualifying games,
including the 2-1 defeat against England. He played throughout Poland's
three defeats in the finals as he took his international tally to 17 caps.
The season of 2006-07 was a good for Boruc. He helped the Bhoys to a domestic
double, and also shone in the Champions League. Boruc also found himself in
the middle of quite some controversy during this season, mostly because of
his habit of crossing himself before games. This angered Rangers fans when
he did it during Old Firm clashes. After another derby clash at the end of
the season he got in trouble again, this time for taking a 'Celtic Champions'
flag onto the Ibrox pitch.
