2011 Betfair Chase – Haydock 3.05 – 19.11.11

Long Run & Kauto Star go head to head

Horse Racing Betting

All eyes will be Haydock on Saturday afternoon, as we see the great Kauto Star square off against Long Run again in the Betfair Chase betting. Apparently Kauto Star is not too far away from retirement, now at eleven years old, but the veteran is looking for his fourth Betfair Chase title. The two steeplechase stars came together at the Gold Cup this year, when the young pretender Long Run fulfilled his immense potential when he beat out the field including Denman as well, to take the title with Sam Waley-Cohen taking the ride. There has been talk that Kauto Star may stand a decent chance, but that is not a statement full of optimism. The two times Gold Cup winner pulled up in his last outing, the first time we have ever seen that from him, and the bookies have been happy to let his odds hang long as he hits the twilight of his career. The defeat at the Gold Cup this year, was Kauto Star’s second defeat against his stablemate, with Long Run also winning by a massive 19 length at Haydock in mid January. So it is Long Run who is taking a lot of backing in Betfair Chase betting for Saturday’s 3.05 at Haydock. Long Run continues to look towards a superb future, as the six year old deliver at the Gold Cup this year at Cheltenham. He hasn’t been out since then, but he is the outright favourite across the board with the online bookmakers to take the title. With Kauto Star already showing signs of drifting in the six horse field, is it going to be all plain sailing for Long Run?

A field of six horses have been declared for the race, along with Diamond Harry, Time for Rupert, Weird Al and Pure faith and we think that Diamond Harry has to be worth a look here. The Hennessy Gold Cup winner from last November, hasn’t been out in competition since, but is attracting a lot of attention in the Betfair Chase betting market. The best outsider price is going to come from Weird Al, who beat Time For Rupert at the Charlie Hall Chase in October. There could be a little surprise to come from Weird Al and wouldn’t be surprised to him push Kauto Star hard for a third. There have been good whispers on the rumour mill about Weird Al turning up and causing a stir, because there has been a lot of good, positive reports about him. So that is why we Kauto Star is looking like a bit of a long shot, even though Ruby Walsh thinks that he is underrated for the race.

So we pretty much expect this to be a two horse race between Long Run and Diamond Harry, with Long Run obviously the front runner. You simply cannot ignore the power that Long Run has not only shown so far, but the potential underneath that is still bursting to get out.  So while the attraction at Haydock on Saturday, here is Long Run up against Kauto Star, it is probably going to been Long Run up against Diamond Harry, whose price has already been cut by William Hill in the build up. The obvious clear tip is Long Run, but there could be a very strong chase from Diamond Harry, and really think that Weird Al can start mixing it with the best in this short pack.
