Serbia’s Novak Djokovic was in a tussle over the second half of season in 2012 with Roger Federer for the number one spot. Nadal has almost half as many points as leader Djokovic has and that is a huge gap to try and close. So Djokovic looks more than likely to hold on to his number one spot at the end of next season. He should earn enough points through the big tournaments throughout the year to keep his advantage.
Can Roger Federer challenge? Probably, but you wouldn’t look for him to be going as deep, as consistently as Djokovic when it comes to the big Tour points on offer. When it comes to 2013 Grand Slam Tennis betting, Djokovic has to take precedence over Federer, especially if Nadal gets back in the picture. The return of Nadal will mean that the Grand Slam could be split quite evenly this term, as it was last year. The top four in the world each got their hands on one, and it would take a supreme amount of dominance in the Majors for say Federer or Andy Murray to break Djokovic’s grip on top spot.
So can Andy Murray challenge for the end of season number one spot? He of course made his Grand Slam breakthrough last season when taking the US Open in an epic final against Novak Djokovic. It will be very interesting to see how he pushes on from that, whether he can use that experience as a building block for more Grand Slam success in 2012. But again, you look at how much has been won over the past couple of seasons by proven winners, and you lean back towards Djokovic.

Can the British number one deliver again? While he is trading as second favourite in the market to finish the 2013 ATP season as number one, in order to get close to that he would really need to pull out a couple of Grand Slam wins through the season. Is he close enough to Djokovic to do that? This is the thing, it is unknown, Murray is still an unknown quantity. He broke his duck, but he is not yet a proven multiple Grand Slam champion, so it is hard to say. Again, the biggest stumbling block for Murray is going to be Djokovic. The Brit could snatch either one of them, especially with the challenge of Federer expected to fade this season and Nadal needing competitive time back on court to prove himself.

The Swiss superstar took his first Grand Slam title in ten attempts last season at Wimbledon, not making it past the semi finals in any of the other three. You expect him to be down the pecking order behind Djokovic and Murray (if the Brit really is on his upward swing). What is to come in 2013 for Nadal? After taking the French Open title for the seventh time in eight season, his second round exit at Wimbledon was the last competitive action that the Spaniard played last year. How long will the road back from injury be? A fit Nadal would be pushing Djokovic hard for all Grand Slam titles, but it could take a few months for him to get back to full match sharpness. So what he will deliver, how his health will be, is anyone’s guess. But there is his record at Roland Garros which is phenomenal. He has a 52-1 record on the clay at the French Open and if he is going to strike back, then it will be there.
