Froome faces his greatest challenge to date in the Tour de France

Sports Betting

When this year’s Tour de France gets under way in Dusseldorf this weekend, Chris Froome will be bidding for his fourth win in the world’s greatest cycle race.

But his team, Team Sky, is no longer well loved among the millions who will line the roads of France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg over the next three weeks. Accusations of doping have led to open hostility and suspicions remain. Team Sky’s general manager Sir Dave Brailsford has had his practices scrutinised by the media and MPs and have left many cycling fans wondering if there is a fire behind the smoke.

There is jealousy as well, of course, given Team Sky’s recent successes, but Froome has largely been left out of any criticism, though will probably have to ride the race of his life to retain his title given the course for the 104th staging of the great race seems to have been specifically designed to thwart another Team Sky victory.

This year’s race sticks to the eastern forests and mountains before crossing into the Pyrenees, criss-crossing that formidable barrier before the riders depart Marseille for a flight to Paris. But there are fewer climbs this year so organisers are hoping that more actual race-riding will keep competition intense right up to the final time-trial around the French capital.

Froome is only a best 13/8 with Betfred to win again but looks vulnerable this year. He’s 32 so isn’t going to be getting any quicker. The Briton performer poorly in the Critérium du Dauphiné suggesting he is not in the same shape as at this time 12 months ago.

Australian Richie Porte has bounced back well from breaking his scapula in a crash at last year’s Olympics but has a reputation as a ‘nearly man’. A puncture and a crash with a cameraman possibly cost him a podium finish last year but he should have won the Criterium recently and again bottled it in the final stage. The 21/10 with bwin doesn’t look much value.

Nairo Quintana (a best 15/2) has a second and third to his name in the Tour de France but went the distance in the Giro d’Italia and may not have much left. Alberto Contador is now 34 but has postponed retirement to compete one last time in the great race. He is a general 16/1 to wind the clock back but he’s not the force of old.

FABIO ARU won the Vuelta E Espana in 2015 and was second in the Giro d’Italia. The Astana rider, nicknamed Little Angel, deliberately swerved the Italian classic this year but was fifth in the Criterium, in which he got better as the race wore on. That was just about the perfect preparation and, available at 22/1, he might be the pretender to Froome’s crown representing the only outfit that has threatened Team Sky’s dominance in recent years.
