Kalondra can kick on in the Lanzarote Hurdle

Horse Racing Betting

Lanzarote may mean sangria, sunshine and sea to holiday-makers but the name conjures up different memories for horse racing enthusiasts.

He was a superstar among an era of hurdling superstars. Winner of the 1974 Champion Hurdle, beating the brilliant Comedy Of Errors, and of 20 of his 33 races, he tragically died in the 1977 Cheltenham Gold Cup after breaking his leg. He was a battler and punters always take jumpers like that to their hearts so it’s only fitting there is a race named his honour, though none of the runners in the 32Red Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton this Saturday are likely to match his exploits any time soon. It is a Listed handicap, however, and a competitive one and many bookmakers have already compiled a market.

The news that Kempton could close as early as 2021 has infuriated the racing fraternity and a large section of the race-going public. Home of the King George VI Chase, there are plans to build a housing estate on the site and move the course’s all-weather fixtures to a new track at Newmarket. The Jockey Club has sanctioned the sale so it looks as though closure of Kempton is almost a done deal but that would be a real shame as there are few Turf tracks that stand up to the winter weather as well as the Sunbury venue and established races like the Lanzarote Hurdle risk being lost. Supporters will say that major races can be switched to other courses like Sandown but that track offers a far different challenge to Kempton.

Lanzarote Hurdle History and Trends

The Lanzarote Hurdle is open to horses aged four years or older and run at Kempton Park over a distance of about 2m5f – 10 hurdles are jumped. First run a year after Lanzarote’s death, it was increased to its current distance in 2007 having previously been run over 2m. Kempton has always been its home but it was run at Carlisle in 2006 when the southern course was being redeveloped.
In the last nine years (there was no race in 2009 due to bad weather), six-year-olds have done best. Eight of the last nine winners were rated 130 or higher. The last seven winners have started at single-figure odds, including three favourites and one joint favourite, so it may pay to concentrate on those near the head of the market.

Venetia Williams won the Lanzarote Hurdle last year with Yala Enki and her Bennys King arrives off the back of a game first win at Uttoxeter. He is 8/1 with Coral this weekend and that firm are also best-priced for the unbeaten Doesyourdogbite (6/1) and Modus (12/1).

KALONDRA was a comfortable winner over 2m5f at Ascot. That was his 10th start over hurdles but probably a career-best and showed he could win away from Worcester. An 8lb higher mark is a concern but Richard Johnson takes over the reins from a conditional, which is a plus, and the current 12/1 with Paddy Power looks decent value.
