Big heavyweight showdown almost a done deal

Sports News

Promotor Eddie Hearn says that a deal for Anthony Joshua to fight Wladimir Klitschko is almost in place but he’s expressed fears that the 40-year-old from Ukraine is not the right opponent for AJ at this stage of his career.

Klitschko may be in the twilight of his career but is still a dangerous fighter, his defeat by Tyson Fury in Dusseldorf just over a year ago being his first since he was stopped by Corrie Sanders, also in Germany, in 2003.

It is understood an announcement will be made in the coming days to confirm the IBF heavyweight champion is making the second defence of his title against Klitschko at the Manchester Arena on December 10 and the former IBF, WBO and WBA champion would represent the most difficult fight of Joshua’s short professional career to date.

There’s a distinct possibility that Joshua could lose his undefeated status and title to a heavyweight considered among the best in recent history. Hearn’s future plans for Joshua would be up in the air and he will be accused of making the fight too soon – but it could be a chance worth taking!

As Tyson Fury has vacated the WBA and WBO belts and had his license to fight suspended, the governing bodies would love an Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko bout to have belts on the line. Joshua is certainly a more stylish heavyweight than Fury and has a huge right hand. If he could stop the veteran, his reputation would reach a new level. However, defeat would see his deal with US network Showtime lose value.

If the fight goes ahead, Joshua has youth and speed on his side. But he’s never been in the ring with anyone like Wladimir Klitschko, who has a wealth of experience. That said, would Klitschko still be quick enough to catch Anthony Joshua? He hasn’t fought for almost a year whereas the Briton has stopped Dominic Breazeale since knocking out Charles Martin at the O2 in April to win his IBF title.

It really is very difficult to call but bookmakers are currently siding with Joshua at a general 4/5. That suggests there is some value in the 6/5 with Bet365 about Klitschko
