Madrid to shut down the German challenge

Champions League Betting

Atletico Madrid v Bayer Leverkusen Betting Preview – UEFA Champions League 15th March 7.45pm

Atletico have a two goal lead in the tie after scoring four away goals in Germany in the first leg. It was a thrilling match up but now that the Spaniards have such a good lead, it’s hard to see them opening up too much back on home soil. They don’t concede very much at the Calderon at all and Leverkusen will be in danger of being outclassed and just snuffed out of the tie. There’s a long road back into this for the Germans who need a 3-0 win at minimum to move ahead to the quarter finals. Atletico will be backed to hold on to the positive lead that they have built up.

Atletico Madrid v Bayer Leverkusen Betting Tips

So the Spaniards are fully in the driving seat for this tie and two years ago when they faced up to Bayer Leverkusen, they edged through in a penalty shootout after both had won their respective home matches 1-0 in the tie. After a 4-2 win out in Germany this time around, Atletico are in full control and it’s hard to see them shipping at least three goals in this one. It fact it is probably worth having a crack at the Atletico Madrid 1-0 correct score at Coral which returns a price of 7/1 in this one. Alternatively an option is to go out and back them to win to nil at a price of 15/8 which looks to be very good value. Atletico have faced Leverkusen five times before and they hold a W2 D2 L1 record from those five games. In the UEFA Champions League there have been four previous instances of a side scoring 4+ goals away from home in a Round of 16 1st leg and the team doing so has always progressed.

Atletico are a tough, tough side to get the better of at the Calderon. They have claimed a clean sheet in all but two of their last 16 home games in the UEFA Champions League. Actually only five of their last 17 games in the competition have featured more than two goals so it is worth a punter under 2.5 goals at Coral for a price of 11/10. Diego Simeone’s men have conceded just one goal in their last eight home games in the Champions League and during that sequence there was two clean sheets in three against German sides posted. Atletico have never failed to make it to the quarter finals under Diego Simeone and they have progressed from both of their previous Champions League knockout ties having won the first leg. Antoine Griezmann has scored seven of Atletico’s last ten Champions League home games and he is a price of 10/11 in the anytime goalscorer market. Their home record against Bundesliga opposition is P18 W13 D2 L3.

So there is a massive task ahead for Bayer Leverkusen in this one who have posted a W2 D3 L1 record in their last six away games in UEFA competition. They will need at least three goals on the night and that is not an easy thing against Atletico. Actually Leverkusen have not scored 3 or more goals in any of their last 31 away games in the competition and they have scored just five goals in their last seven games in Spain. They are on a three match losing streak out in Spain as well at the moment with a W3 D3 L12 record there and the Germans have also lost all ten of their UEFA competition ties in which they lost the first leg at home. They have managed to make it through to the quarter finals just once in their last six visits to the Champions League knockout stages. They have struggled badly past the group stage and they have lost nine of their last 10 Champions League knockout games now (W1) but that lone win did come against Atletico. There may be too big of a hill to climb though in this one.

Atletico Madrid v Bayer Leverkusen Predictions

Madrid will likely squeeze this one out comfortably and without any drama. They are a brilliant home side and they just need to shut up shop and coast their way to the next round. Leverkusen are unlikely to create as much as they did in the first leg and they may even get picked off as well. Look for Atletico to win to nil.
