Is Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or a done deal?

Real Madrid team-mates Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo have been confirmed among the first 10 names on the 30-man short-list for the 2016 Ballon d’Or.

Bale, who led Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, is expected to be the only British-born player in the eventual short-list with 20 further names expected to be added this week.

France Football awarded the prestigious trophy last year to Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and the Argentinian will again feature prominently in the voting. He’s already scored two hat-trick in the Champions League this season, though international honours continue to elude him. Barca team-mate Luis Suarez is also nominated.

There are two Premier League players among the top 10 and both play for Manchester City. Striker Sergio Aguero and German midfielder Kevin De Bruyne join Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Juventus trio Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Gianluigi Buffon on the short-list from which the winner is expected to be announced.

Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann, a star for France this summer, complete the line-up as it stands, but bookmakers thinks that the award is already a done deal.

Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win their second Champions League in three years in May and was Portugal’s inspiration in their unlikely path to Euro 2016 glory, despite being forced off with injury in the final.

The Portugal captain, who last won the Ballon d’Or in 2014, is currently a hot favourite to take home the trophy for the fourth time at a best 1/5 with Coral. The second set of nominees is expected to include Luis Suarez, Neymar and Manchester United’s record signing Paul Pogba.
