Bayer Leverkusen v Tottenham Betting Preview – UEFA Champions League 18th October

There are some big points up for grabs in Group E of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. Bayer Leverkusen have thrown away winning positions in both of their games so far to end up drawing both, leaving them a point behind Spurs in the standings. So the Germans need a home win to put themselves in a better position, while Tottenham will see the big opportunity ahead of them as they could open up a four point lead over the Germans with a win on the road on Tuesday night. However, this isn’t going to be any easy game for the White Hart Lane crew. Can they build on that win against CSKA Moscow last time out to put themselves in a strong position?

Bayer Leverkusen v Tottenham Betting Tips

It has been a bit of a strange campaign from the Germans who have taken who have yet to pick up a win in the group stage, but have been ahead in both of their games. They just haven’t been able to hold on to their winning positions so far in group E, so they will want to find a way to go just a little bit better and make this one count at home. Leverkusen are actually running on a ten match unbeaten streak on home soil at the moment with wins in seven of them, so they are in great shape and should be difficult to beat the BayArena. So no easy game for Tottenham in this one and actually Bayer Leverkusen are on an eight match unbeaten streak at home in European competition with a W4 D4 record in that sequence. They blew a 2-0 lead against CSKA Moscow at the BayArena on match day one to draw 2-2 and then shipped a 94th minute goal to end up drawing with Monaco on match day two.

Bayer Leverkusen currently hold a W3 D2 L5 record at home against English sides and their last encounter with one was against Manchester United in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League. Bayer Leverkusen lost that one 5-0. Last season in their UEFA Champions League campaign they finished in third place and went through to the Europa League. They have some scoring power in them, led by former Manchester United man Javier Hernandez who has been in some cracking form of late. Hernandez has netted six of Leverkusen’s last eight goals and they also have Joel Pohjanpalo (who is a doubt for this one) along with Stefan Kiessling who is 15/8 outright favourite in the anytime goalscorer market, with Kevin Volland at 9/4. The form of the Werkself though is only a patchy W2 D2 L2 record in their last six in all competitions.

You can take a price of 4/5 on this game to go over 2.5 goals and it may be worth a flutter on both teams to score at a quote of 4/6. Tottenham after all have scored in each of their competitive games this season across all competitions. The Premier League side head into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw at West Brom on the weekend Dele Alli rescuing a late point for them at the Hawthorns, despite completly dominating the entire first half of the game. The only defeat that Tottenham have suffered this season was against Monaco on Match Day One of the UEFA Champions League. So this becomes a big game for them to try and wrestle control of the group in, and it is just their second meeting with Leverkusen. Their previous encounter was in the 2006 UEFA Cup group stage which Spurs won 1-0 thanks to former Leverkusen man Dimitar Berbatov.

Following their defeat against Monaco, Spurs carded a 1-0 win at CSKA Moscow on match day two. The last time that Tottenham was in Germany was during last season’s UEFA Europa League when they ran into Borussia Dortmund and lost 3-0 in a rough game for them. Spurs have actually won just one of their last five away from home in the UEFA Champions League and their heaviest ever European loss happened in Germany, an 8-0 loss at FC Koln in the 1995 Intertoto Cup. Tottenham hold a W9 D2 L7 record against German sides and that is W3 D1 L6 in Germany. Former Leverkusen player Son Heung-Min has been in great form lately and is a 12/5 shot in the anytime goalscorer market for this one, with Vincent Janssen at 15/8. How will Tottenham fare having lost Toby Alderweireld to injury? That could be a massive blow for them.

Bayer Leverkusen v Tottenham Predictions

Tottenham don’t give up a lot at the back and that is because they keep the ball well and press forward. The loss of Alderweireld is a blow and Leverkusen have goals in them to trouble the Lilywhites. Spurs are taking on a good home side here and a win for Tottenham may just be out of their reach in this one and they may have to settle for a draw. Look for a 1-1 correct score which has some appeal, whatever happens this is likely to be under 2.5 goals.
