Betfred Super League Preview – Rugby League Betting

Surprises could be in store in this year's Super League

Rugby Betting

The structure of the 2017 Super League season could have a major impact on the consistency of the likely title challengers. Teams will be forced to squeeze in a second set of fixtures over the Spring Bank Holiday to make up for the delayed start and the leading clubs will also face disruption in May when England play an international against Samoa in Sydney as part of their preparations for the World Cup at the end of the year.

Warrington Wolves look sure to be in the mix again after finishing up with the League Leaders’ Shield last year. Tony Smith’s team were runners-up in both the Grand Final and Challenge Cup final last year and will be looking to go one better in at least one of thiose in 2017. Wolves are a general 7/2 to win the Grand Final this season and have strengthened over the close season but their coach will be aware that nothing can be taken for granted.

Catalan Dragons remain something of an enigma but it’s surely only a matter of time before the French club makes a major impact in Super League and they can be backed at 25/1 to reach this year’s Grand Final. But teams do, of course, have different targets. Salford Reds and Huddersfield Giants both had a big scare in the Super 8s last season and will be determined that they don’t find themselves in a similar situation again – the Giants have recently appointed England international Leroy Cudjoe as their new captain.

But Huddersfield are only 6/5 with Coral for a bottom four finish this season, who have Leigh at 8/15 in the same market.

The Centurions are simply targeting survival in Super League after dropping just three points in the Championship and beating three of their four Super League opponents in the Super 8s Qualifiers. They’ve replaced relegated Hull KR but are under no illusions that they are going to find life much tougher this year. Leigh were last in Super League in 2004 but only lasted one season and most are expecting their stay to be equally short-lived this time around.

St Helens are 6/1 with Coral to win the Grand Final but have suffered a massive blow before the real action gets under way as England scrum-half Matty Smith has broken his leg and faces months on the sidelines. Castleford have recruited well and the Tigers would be this season’s surprise package – they are 20/1 with bwin to win the Grand Final but Wigan Warriors are the general 3/1 favourites with Hull FC also prominent in the betting at a general 11/2. Leeds Rhinos are available at 8/1 with several bookmakers.
