Big Sam the man for England? Allardyce 5/4 favourite for top job

Race down to Allardyce & Klinsmann?

Sam Allardyce seems to have risen to the top of the charts in the Next England Manager betting market. The 61 year old, currently manager of Sunderland is apparently in the running for the picture and some reports have him being interviewed by the FA along with Jurgen Klinsmann this week. Other reports are saying that Allardyce hasn’t even been contacted by the FA yet about the vacancy left behind by Roy Hodgson’s drastic failure at Euro 2016.

There has been such a nod towards Allardyce that he is in at a price of 5/4 with online betting site Skybet to take England’s top job. That is a drastic chop on him because at the start of July he was a big 10/1 shot with some bookmakers. Allardyce has been in management for over 20 years and had success this year in keeping Sunderland afloat in the Premier League. A passionate man, he would earn the respect the of the players in any England camp pretty quickly.

Of course though, you think of Allardyce and don’t immediately think style. There is a more grassroots feel about his style, not afraid to defend for long periods and play the long ball forwards. Allardyce would work the England side and may be a huge benefit to the overall set up. England are not a top side at the moment and someone different has to come in and shake them up, get the best out of them.

The other alternative it would seem, is Jurgen Klinsmann, the current USA boss. He was part of the overhaul of German football which led them to their stylish set up that they have now, but while he was at the front, most of the credit for the positive chances was given to Joachim Low, who was working alongside Klinsmann. The big German would immediately have more appeal in terms of style, but the basics of his game is counter attacking football. So not too different from Allardyce really.

England have failed before with the likes of Sven Goran Eriksson, Fabio Capello and Roy Hodgson and having another man at the top come in and worry more about style than substance could be an issue which holds ENgland back. England need to look forward, look to someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty at a lower level, because frankly, England aren’t going to win a major tournament anytime soon. So could Allardyce be the right man?
