Believe it or not, Britain have a woman in the final of a WTA Tour event, and just to celebrate the occasion even further, she is favourite. We are talking about young Laura Robson, who won Olympic silver with Andy Murray in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon. The last time that a British woman won the final of a WTA event New Kids on the Block were at the height of their fame, and Steffi Graf was the world number one. Yes, it has been that long, going all the way back to 1988when Sara Gomer went and won the WTA title in Aptos. Rocketing ahead 24 years later, and Britain’s Laura Robson is in the final of Guangzhou, China. Jo Durie was the last British woman to make it to a WTA final in 1990.

Catch Laura Robson in action in the final of Guangzhou at online bookmaker Bet365. The online bookmaker is providing a live stream of the tennis action from China as Robson looks to be Britain’s first winner on the WTA for over twenty years.

It has been a terrific week for the youngster, who capped it with a win over Sorana Cirstea in the semi finals. That was a big result for Robson over the world number 30 and this run in China has been the culmination of a fine stretch of form from her as she starts maturing to the levels of potential. The Australian born player is still only 18 years of age, but in conjunction with her silver medal at the Olympics, she made a terrific run to the last sixteen of this year’s US Open. Along the way she beat Na Li and also ended the career of the great Kim Clijsters who went into retirement after Flushing Meadows.

This will be Robson’s first title on the WTA and she is favourite to get it done. She goes up against Hsieh Su-Wei who is a pretty unorthodox player. You really never know what the Chinese Taipei player is going to do next. Hsieh is ranked 53 in the world (with Robson behind at 74th) is one of those rare players who makes the unexpected happen. She baffles opponents with unorthodox spins, angles and net-rushes and she got the better of the hot Urszula Radwanksa in the semi final. The two have met before, last year in Japan and Robson lost that encounter, stating that she just didn’t know what shot her opponent was going to hit next. Robson is far more matured than least season, is reading opponents better and is hitting confident winners. A big opportunity for her.
