Europa League 2017 Last 32 – Betting Odds & Predictions

Europa League Betting

The Europa League 2017 heads into the first knockout stage this weekend with the Round of 32. This is the point at which the tournament gets a real shake up as you have the eight third-placed teams from the UEFA Champions League Group Stage dropping down to compete in the tournament. So now punters have a much clearer picture of just who is likely to go through and contend for the title, because ahead of this, it is just such an unknown quantity of who is actually going to be in the round of 32.

It is the two English clubs left in the competition who are trading as the outright favourites and by a considerable distance as well as the Last 32 of the Europa League betting lines up. Manchester United are 4/1 favourites at Bet365 to take the title this season with Tottenham in at 7/1 and the rest of the contenders are all out in double figures, with Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk at 12/1 closest options to the Premier League side. While that makes things look pretty cut and dry, as is want with the Europa League, it isn’t generally that way.

Why? Because it still be a massive distraction for the Premier League clubs having to play on a Thursday night, especially, as in the case of both Spurs and Manchester United, there are big prizes to be played for in the Premier League, which can’t be sacrificed. Landing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League through a top four finish is going to be top order for both of them, even though the winner of the UEFA Europa League does get a spot. It’s too unpredictable for that and the odds aren’t great through the knockout tournament.

Europa League 2017 Last 32 Predictions

Manchester United and Tottenham are the headline grabbers of the stage. Tottenham head out on the road for the first leg of their match up against Belgian side Gent. It doesn’t look as if there is too much there for the Lilywhites to be too bothered about in what will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs. Spurs are winless though in their previous four visits to Belgium, but they should breeze through this over the two legs and don’t look to be in too much danger at all. Tottenham are 5/6 odds on value to win the first leg of their tie.

Neither do Manchester United who start their Last 32 tie at home against French opposition St Etienne. The Red Devils had a pretty low key campaign in the group stage as they look to get their hands on the only major UEFA trophy they have never won. The Red Devils are gone undefeated in each of their last 12 UEFA home games against French opposition, winning nine of them. St Etienne have only won one of six previous match against English sides, losing on each of their three previous trips to England. The Red devils are 1/2 to win their first leg over 12/1 underdogs St Etienne.

The big tie of the Last 32 is Borussia Monchengladbach v Fiorentina. The Italians have made a decent European showing in recent times but the Germans, who had to part with manager Andre Schubert recently, have brought in a new man Dieter Hecking, who seems to have breathed some life into the club. The Germans start their tie at home and they are decent value to be backing to get through this tough tie against the Italians. It should be a pretty tight, competitive match up and the recent shake up at the club may just give the Germans an edge to hang in there.

In the UEFA Champions League group stage, Rostov pulled off a shock home win over Bavarian giants Bayern Munich. So they go as favourites as they take on Czech opponents Sparta Prague in the round of 32, however, there should be plenty of spark coming in from this one from the underdogs, Sparta. It is they who may well be worth a flutter ahead of time to get a point on the board to start their tie out in Russia. Rostov are odds on 10/11 to win the game, but Sparta may be undervalued at way out at 3/1.

Shakhtar Donetsk will be looking for their pedigree in the competition to get past Celta Vigo and they are looking the value option in that tie. Former Chelsea man Branislav Ivanovic has teamed up with the class act of Zenit St Petersburg and they shouldn’t have too many issues in dealing with Anderlecht in their round of 32 tie. The Russians look a pretty strong dark horse shot in the Europa League 2017 outright winners market as there aren’t many sides in the field who look likely to get the better of them easily.

Another of the heavyweight clashes in the Europa League Last 32 is Villarreal v Roma. This should be a great open tie between the two of them and this one is pretty much a toss up between two solid sides. Villarreal have home advantage first and they are narrow favourites to win that game, but with Roma going along so well in Serie A this season, they are well worth a punt to not only go beyond the round, but to put in a serious challenge for the title. The winner of this will have their odds trimmed considerably to land the title this season. Big, big tie.

Europa League 2017 Top Goalscorer

Leading the way in the goalscoring charts for this season’s UEFA Europa League are Athletic Bilbao’s Aritz Aduriz and Zenit’s Giuliano who have each netted six goals so far. They are followed by a five goal haul for each of Roma’s Edin Dzeko and Anderlecht’s Lukasz Teodorczyk. Out of the main front runners at the moment, there has to be some big value on Roma’s Dzeko who has been in cracking goal scoring form this season and with the Italians looking on point to make a serious run at the title, look for the former Manchester City man to light up the scoring charts and is a 13/2 option to do so.

Europa League 2017 Predictions

It is still a big field at the moment so it is worth looking around to try and dig out some longer priced options. Manchester United and Tottenham both aren’t particularly appealing value to win the tournament, because it’s a long slog for them and in a tight scrap for the Champions League places in the Premier League, it’s worth avoiding both. That pulls in Roma who are a great appealing price to take the title as they will likely realise as the season goes on, that they are unlikely to stop Juventus winning the Serie A title. So they can afford to put focus on this. Then you are looking at some big each way value on Zenit St Petersburg at Bet365 who have a good mix of experience and toughness to put together a strong campaign.
